I am occasionally offered guns at good prices, but worry that they may be stolen.......Is there a site that you can type in the serial number and model to see if the firearm is not stolen?

No. There is not. You need to be a police officer (or otherwise qualified law enforcement agent; SLED, SBI, FBI, et al.) with NCIC access.

That is a private website that asks people to voluntarily enter their own information. It has nothing to do with law enforcement or criminal reporting.

On an unrelated note, if you are offered a gun at a deal "too good to be true", please Private Message me with the details and contact information. I like guns and dislike spending money.

You can call your local sheriff or non-emergency police number and ask them to do a lookup; if it is stolen you can pass their info on to the police and hopefully someone gets their property back!

Alternatively, and I've done this before, is to call the BATF and kindly ask them to do a quick "background-check" on someone, or a firearm. Had a sketchy guy want me to send a firearm directly to his house bypassing the FFL. I called them, let them know, they said he could legally own it so I offered to let him pick an ffl or it would be shipped it to the nearest FFL to him; he finally played ball.
