I have had the NFA itch for about a year now and its getting to point where I need to scratch it. My biggest hesitation is that I tend to sell and trade my firearms so often and if I get an SBR it wont be something I can just throw up on armslist or something.

I decided on an SBR because Hollywood has given me an unrealistic expectation of a suppressor and I know I wont be happy with it and I can't afford a machine gun.

Now for the fun the part. What kind of SBR do I want? I know all about the form 1. They are already printed up and ready to be filled out. AR15 is the simplest and cheapest way to go but it is also the most boring. Does any one know how much trouble it would to take an AK pistol and add something like the under folder stock to it?

My most recent idea is to take a PTR PDW

And the add this stock to it after the paperwork goes through

Does anyone have any experience owning, shooting or making one of these? This is one of those things that once it goes through its done so I want something I know I'm going to enjoying shooting and I'm going to sell a couple guns to fund it so I want to be 100% certain before I do it.

Any advice, knowledge, and pointers will be greatly appreciated.

That's a great-looking gun and it has tempted me for a couple of years, myself.

The only thing that stopped me is that I don't have any 7.62 NATO guns and don't want to stock another caliber.

I've done the Form 1 thing on a few pistols and turned them into SBR's. It's so much easier than having a full-length rifle or shotgun cut-down.

Yeah I hate getting a new caliber. I have a DPMS LR-308 so it is one of the calibers I keep around. I figure if I'm going to go for it I should go big.

I shot a PTR 308 rifle I think the classic wood model last time I went to the range. That thing would throw the brass like 10 yrds forward. Another thing about PTR is they are made right here in SC I believe.
I'm wanting to turn my AR pistol into a SBR but I'm looking into forming a trust first.

The problem with the HK line up is most are single caliber SBR's, although the 308 can be fitted with a 22LR conversion.

Like it or not the AR15 is the most versatile and the 9mm & 22LR versions make a nice suppressed set up.

With a few MG's to shoot I never thought I'd need nor want any SBR's in my collection. Boy was I wrong and in a few months I'll own 3, and one will be an AR15.

my first NFA gun was an AR SBR then an SBS then an AR factory machine gun.

now the SBR doesnt get much action.

if my suppressor gets here before hunting season i might use the SBR with it to hunt verry verry qui otly.

Question for the OP: what about "Hollywood" turned you away from a suppressor?

The noise level reduction. In my mind I expect a suppressor to make it sound a little quieter than someone spitting on the sidewalk. I know that's not the case but I still have that expectation. I'm thinking a suppressor will be a nice addition to this 308 down the road.

I know the AR would be a great beginner SBR and I've built enough AR's that it would be easy to do too but I just want something that is nothing like anything else in my safe.

.22lr suppressed bolt actions are pretty quiet.

The PTR PDW would be an amusing range toy, lose a lot out of a .308 going that short.
AK pistols usually have an odd rear trunnion to make mounting a stock more of a pain. I think cutting the rear trunnion off and welding a new one on is what usually happens. (Don't take my word on it though)
You could SBR a PS90, there's some fun stuff to do to get the shroud back in place (PS90 barrels are actually shrouded like a Ruger 22/45 LITE's barrel).

I built my SBR for 300BLK and it gives the versatility to put whatever I wanted on to it. I have a second lower pending SBR registration as well.

I sent mine in exactly two weeks ago and the check cleared last Wednesday. So I guess we will be waiting together. :)

There might be some improvement as I've read some posts about forms arriving last week that were mailed late Sept / early Oct of 2013.
That would be really nice because I have several that were mailed at that time myself!

I've got an October 4th pending date (hopefully sequestration didn't bump it back too far...holidays also delay stamps submitted this time of year) and I'm hoping to see it soon. I've seen some approvals with late September and early October pendings...crossing my fingers.

I've always debated an SBR. I always wonder if that stamp money should go to another suppressor first but it's sooooo tempting. I'd love an 11.5" AR with my .30 cal can

Well I have just built a 7.62x39 AR pistol so it was just $200 for the stamp which at the time was more affordable since I had set up the trust. But I'm saving up for a YHM phantom LT in .30 cal which I think is a very well priced can.

i bought my YHM 30 cal can from Jason at UAG. go and look at his stock. from what i searched out i got a good deal.

i sent the papers on Oct. 1, 2013.

If you don't mind me asking what did you pay for it? Because I found the YHM phantom LT on SilencerShop.com for $581.
