I'm considering buying a model 25 Mountain Gun in .45 Colt. I plan to use as a backpacking/hiking gun. Does anyone have any experience with one of these revolvers?

Thanks.

Wouldn't you want something with more penetration than a .45 colt for a backpacking/hiking gun?

I would look for a .357 or .44 mag

.45 Colt can be loaded up to the equal of .44 Mag.

That said, ammo selection will probably be better with .44 Mag.

Yep, I run my S&W 65-5 a little slower than my .44 mag reloads.
The .44 mag is a Ruger Super Redhawk, that I think is a little more robust than the S&W, so I don't get all the way to max loads with it.

I had a guy trade me some 350 grain .45 with gas checks for some .300 Blackout brass.
I'm going to try some loads in the S&W.

We had a similar thread on this awhile back. You can't load up the S&Ws like a Ruger. The cylinder stop notch is right in the centerline of the chamber leaving it pretty dang thin. The rest of the gun will handle plenty more but I wouldn't press it too hard. A .44 would be a much better choice.
