Ruger sr 1911 6700

Wife has OK'ed a new side arm due to black bears showing up on the game cam.... Ok so I know the odds of a black bear attack are slim to none but at the same time she does not want me taking the 9 mm to the stand. I know .45 is not ideal bear round...but gets me in the 1911 and is a bucket list gun for me. I can get a ruger 1911 for around 670 ish. This hits the top of the budget, any other recommendations. Game cam bear is a bruit nice looking bear, I will try to get picks up, they were on my phone but phone is messed up. big guy looks 350 + (in kentucky) Thanks for any input. (I also realize bear spray would be way more effective). Again wife is allowing to spend money on a gun!

I would say .44 Mag revolver for bear, at a minimum. Low-velocity like .45ACP won't penetrate the fat layer.

A Glock model 20, in 10mm, would be significantly better than your selection and cheaper, too.

If you are set on a 1911, and you have a reasonable expectation of encountering bears, and you're on a budget, then you're going to have to compromise (read: change) one of those parameters.

You can get a 1911 in 10mm but it will cost more than $670.

You can get a 10mm for less than $670 but it won't be a 1911.

You can get a .45ACP but it won't perform adequately on an animal larger than you.

Any loud noise, or concussive shockwave, can cause a charging bear to retreat. There's also the "golden BB" magic shot where even a .22 short will instantly kill a blue whale. But, if you're deliberately setting out to encounter a bear, an animal that is known to be both larger in size and greatly stronger than you, you're going to want something that can penetrate to Central Nervous System core targets and shut down an attack if the animal has made the final decision to Kill. You.

If you go with a 1911 for a bear your best bet is to file down the front sight completely. That way after you shoot the bear it will not hurt as much when the bear gets angry and shoves the 1911 up your ass.

I'm just kidding with you. I agree with rotarymike. 44 mag would be the absolute bottom caliber I'd be looking at. Even then I'd still consider fling down that front sight.

When I bear and boar hunt, I always take my Glock 10mm with me. A .45 will work, but I feel more comfortable with a 10mm.

Thanks for the responses. More than likely black bears are gonna be long gone with my huffing and stomping to the tree stand. I will take my rape whistle just incase. No go on the mossin pistol I bow hunt and that would be a nasty fine. I'm taking advantage of the wife giving me the go on spending money . Just got back from the range and took a ruger 1911 out for a test drive. First time shooting a 1911, gun shot great and felt great. I'll also look into the 10mm and 40 in other models/styles. Whats the ammo difference on .45/.40/10mm. On the filing down of the front sight I do that to all my guns anyway I don't need them when I hold the pistol at 90 degrees fo' kill shots yo' :lol:

If we are talking 1911's for the sake of having a 1911 I think the Ruger is a fine choice. I've never owned a Ruger I didn't like. I've had lots of 1911's and they were all great but the Ruger is a great looking pistol. If I were in the market for a 1911 right now I'd be giving that one a close look.

I can't comment on the bear situation but having owned a Ruger 1911 I would recommend them. Actually plan on getting another one when I can afford it.

just for the want of a 1911, Schultz has one for sale for $600.

as for a bear attack while deer hunting id rather use my deer rifle, 308. probably only get one shot, maybe, on a charging bear. after that your life is in his hands.

Your best bet against a bear is to have a "friend" who can't run as fast as you. :lol: Or maybe a 12GA with birdshot (if you've been following the other conversations).

I don't blame you for getting the 1911. It was my first handgun I ever bought for myself. Albeit mine is a Kimber. I agree with others that it's no bear gun but I gathered from your original post what you clarified since, that it was just an opportunity to get one and it wasn't really to use on bear. Black bears are one thing we had in spades in NY. Attacks these days (now that they closed the public dumps and drilled it through peoples heads to stop feeding them as pets) are very rare. Generally speaking if the bears see you, you will never see them. If they do attack I'd rather have a larger caliber rifle or 12ga but personally I will take a slug or magnum buckshot to defend against bear. Maybe it's just my yankee insanity but I actually would consider wild pigs a bigger risk than the average black bear.

Ruger Super Blackhawk .45 Colt. Is loaded by manufacturers to .44 Magnum levels with less pressure. A great round. Hand load to soft or hard hitters. Revolver withstands loads to Freedom Arms level.

now i know its not a Colt but i know several people with Rock Island 1911's with thousands of rounds down the pipe and there still working just fine
give the RI 1911 10mm some thought
