So I have been looking at the Vortex Viper scopes and a couple of the scopes are FFP, which i believe is front focal plane. They cost about 150 more than the others is it worth the extra money? Is there an advantage of the 6-24 magnification over the 4-16? Disadvantage?

I plan on hunting with the rig, but mainly target shooting.

Vortex Viper PST FFP 6-24 50mm 899.00
Vortex Viper PST 6-24 50mm 749.00
Vortex Viper PST 4-16 50mm forgot

FFP is great if you are going to be ranging targets, are you going to be ranging?

Thing about scopes is the double duty can get you inot trouble now and again, for example I have a 223 that I use for shooting p-dogs and have a 6-24x40 scope and it works great for p-dogs and on the range BUT when it gets hot the mirage washes if your over 12x, when I first got started shooting tactical I used a straight 10x scope and had no problem hitting targets out to 1K and while I might not have been able to pick out the irregularities in the paper at 100 yards I still had no proble shooting fair groups. Take that 223, when I was replaceing the optics on my 17 Rem I took it yote hunting with me and yes I had the scope on 6x but try to follow a yote running at 75 yards! lets just say he is still running probably

I'm going to throw this out there and say your best bet would more than likely be the 4-14, low enough power that you can still follow a yote or deer and enough power for when you put the rifle on the bench. I've got 3 scopes in the 4-14 range and have no problems hell most of the time I still shoot on 9x but that's where my reticle is calibrated. Later,

I agree that 16 is plenty. My Nightforce goes up to 22 but I rarely go above 15x except for spotting for others and seeing where i missed and using the reticle at 22x (ranging and true reticle size) to make my adjustments. My plan is to put that scope on the 7mmRM that I am building for 1000+ and put the SFP Viper 4-16x50 or the NXS 3.5-15x50 on my .308. Being that I prefer to use a LRF for my ranging the FFP isn't what I need. Ymmv
