Revolver guys, help me please.

Your not going to find a Dan Wesson revolver new that is and for the record I damn sure miss the one I had, I think the G17 would be good mainly due to the round count and while every gun will crap on ya the Glock is about as close to revolver reliable as your going to get. I do like the idea of a scatter gun in the house with women the chances of a miss are much less and the thought if said bad guy see's a woman with a shotgun I hear they tend to behave.

For revolvers I always liked the Mod 10 or the Mod 28 I think was the 357 version of the 38 I can't recall there are too many different numbers lol Later,

Matt,

The model 19 or 66 is one of the best combat revolvers ever produced. A 4" model is about as good as one gets for balance. Smaller hands or larger hands they just seem to work for most people, you might have to find a set of grips that fit her, but they're everywhere. There's a reason why almost every cop used to be issued one.

Kurt's advice is as usual sound. If she can manipulate the slide well (some women can't or so they think), I'd definitely stick with a Glock or M&P. Otherwise you just can't beat a K frame Smith revolver for simplicity when it counts the most.

Not to mention can she clear a malfunction when someone's coming at her with a knife? Will she use the proper grip to avoid limp wristing the gun?

I discourage semi autos for non gun people...... Too much can go wrong.

You want to get her a pistol get her a revolver, one she likes and can shoot. If its just a house gun get her a 20 gauge.

That's why I was leaning towards a revolver. Aim and squeeze the trigger. Nothing simpler than that.
I'm gonna work with her more on grip and safety etc.

Someone mentioned the SP101. I had one at one time, and the Ruger post style grip design made shooting .357s bearable. .38s were a breeze. The SP is a little heavier than a J frame, at 25oz even with just the 2 1/4" barrel.

But if she can handle the slide of an auto, and will make the range time, the autos have a lot of benefits.

Why not let your mom decide?
Take her shooting with various different revolvers and semi-autos and let her decide which one best suits her.

I have people ask all the time which gun should I get? I always tell them the same answer. except I usually tell them to avoid the cheap crap like jennings, bryco, davis.....etc

That was the plan. I have a few autos for her to try out but no revolvers so I was fishing for what models of .38/.357 to look at so I would know what I needed to find to rent/borrow so she could try them all out.
I've had a couple pm's of guys offering different models for us to try so we'll definitely be taking you guys up on the offers.

I'm torn on this issue because a double action revolver trigger is a terrible thing to inflict on someone who isn't going to practice, especially if you're leaving it at factory strength. I would go with the biggest revolver you can find, there's an inverse correlation between perceived difficulty of pull and how much grip you can apply.

My mom-in-law had a G19. She limp wristed often and had a hard time clearing it. She replaced it with a J frame and is very happy. She CCs often. She also made a somewhat serious effort to get the gun to run for her without success. Male sure she has plenty of opportunities to shoot.
