I have read and continue to read about shooters with small hands and how they adapt for mag drops. Being one of these I have adopted using my weak hand thumb for mag drops and continue to work/refine that procedure. This past week I shot a classifier and there was a woman in our squad that was dropping her mags using her strong hand and when I talked to her about it (she was also shooting an M&P) she said her brother had reversed her mag release button. The process of moving is relatively easy so today while cleaning the pistol I reversed mine and worked with it for a while. Started off pretty smooth but the longer I worked at this the more the tip of my trigger finger began to hurt. I guess my question to fellow M&P mshooters who may be using this technique or tried this technique, have you found any cons to it? Any of you using the weak hand thumb for mag drops with any success? Thanks for the time and if there is a link that can help me just let me know where to find it and I will be off to read.

i dont use that technique but here is what i do: i am left handed and have small hands (yeah, im a t-rex). i use my left hand middle finger to hit the mag release button. i dont think i could get my strong hand thumb to reach if i switched sides on the gun.

Regardless of hand size, most people have to break their grip to hit the mag release. When you're getting the fresh mag out you have time to regrip the gun.

Lots of lefties hit the mag release with their index finger. As for a righty reversing it, having that muscle memory when you shoot another pistol is a pretty big con to me.

Could make a bad day worse.

lefty here, I use my trigger finger, regardless if I can reverse the button.
I dont have very big hands, its very fast, and my fingers always off the trigger when Im reloading.

I used to run that Taurus/Beretta 92fs and that was way too big for my tiny Asian hands. I was able to change the mag release on the PT to see if I would like the finger release, but was afraid I'd drop the mag on accident. I got the M&P and run the small backstrap which helps me to reach the mag release without having to regrip. Stippling helped me keep control of that grip during the summer and I feel much more confident when I need to change mags.

Just a quick update on what I have found - After doing research and scouring Youtube I have found some instructional videos that show one how to effectively move the gun (i.e flip) in the hand to reach the mag release. I have put in a couple of hours off and on tonight and seem to have it mastered. I plan to do three night a week drills to get the muscle memory down but I feel I am on my way to doing mag changes like my fellow shooters. More results to follow after the next match. I appreciate all of the reponses from my fellow BS'ers

I'm a lefty and have been dropping mags on pistols that don't have reversible releases. I hit the button with my trigger finger on those guns but then got the M&P and reversed it to how it should be for lefties, and it was the greatest thing ever! Since i have pistols on buttons with both side, i can drop mags with the button on either side, I shoot them about the same amount if not the right handed one more, but with a little time and practice you can drop mags with your trigger finger as fast as the rest of 'em no prob!
