STATUS OF RESTAURANT CARRY: The bill has passed committee but due to procedural issues it needs a 2/3 "special order" vote to proceed. The last time this was attempted it failed by ONE vote. Once past the special order vote, it simply needs standard majority votes to get passed through the Senate. I do not expect big issues in the House, and Gov Haley will almost certainly sign it.
So we need ONE vote to get past the 2/3 special order hurdle. In my correspondence with State Senators, pro-carry members state intent to "try again soon."
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
- Write your State Senators! This form is a way to hit everyone up simultaneously: http://scstatehouse.gov/email.php?T=M&C=SMEMBERS
Sample letter:
- Call Sen McElveen and Sen Shaheen. McElveen is antigun but willing to listen; his wife has a CCW. Shaheen has a 92% rating from the NRA and his district went for Romney. Be respectful and polite; we need to persuade at this point, not threaten. Remember, we only need to sway one.
- Drop post cards in the mail saying "VOTE YES ON S308" to your state Senator, McElveen, and Shaheen.
Restaurant carry is a big step forward. Right now it is a serious crime to step foot into a Chipotle or Outback--in fact, the penalty for doing so is a lifetime prohibition on possessing firearms. SC CCW law urgently needs reform and this is an excellent chance to get forward progress.

Sample letter:
- Call YOUR State Senator, especially if they are a Democrat (all of the "NOs" were Ds)."Ladies & Gentlemen,
I urge you to support S308, which allows trained individuals who have passed background checks to obtain concealed weapons permits to carry sidearms in restaurants. 44 other states have passed similar legislation with no problems reported in any of them. Law abiding citizens should be able to go to Chipotle or patronize a local eatery with their sidearm. S308 allows business owners to decide what is best for them and their business. Support law abiding citizens and small business. Vote "YES" on S308 when it is under consideration for special order."
