It seems Remington is releasing a new pocket pistol called the R51. It uses a rather unique recoil spring method with the recoil spring wrapping the barrel but I can certainly see how that would reduce muzzle flip. In actuality it is a modified version of an old design. They also seemed to go to the extreme with the "dehorning" to reduce things that will catch in a concealed carry situation. It's so new I don't even see it on Remingtons website yet so lets just say I won't be lining up to order one quite yet.

Still it's an interesting new entry to the small concealed carry game. With its reduced recoil, muzzle flip and smaller size it may prove to be a real hit among women.

The original model 51 is an excellent pistol in .380. It is thin and easily concealed. It points well and with better sights should be an accurate piece thanks to a fixed barrel and locking breech. I'm looking forward to trying one in 9mm. My old .380 is a fun gun to shoot.

It reminds me of a cross between the 9X18 P-64 and PA-63. They are both fixed barrel and the recoil spring wraps around the barrel. If it shoots as good as the 9X18's, Remington may have a winner.

Cool looking pistol! Btw, since when is Remington in Charlotte? Is that new or am I behind?

I like the gun for the price point but its ugly. Almost as ugly as a Beretta PX4 Storm.

Remington has leased a building for pistol manufacture while looking for a permanent site around Charlotte.
The move might make sense because the company operates two facilities in the Charlotte area: a pistol manufacturing facility in leased space in Pineville and a warehouse and distribution center in Gastonia.
Graham Pervier, director of Rockingham County Partnership for Economic & Tourism Development, is quoted as saying he has heard Remington was considering moving the headquarters, perhaps to Greensboro.

Wow, thanks Dave! I wish they would open a big manufacturing plant in the Charlotte/Gastonia area. About 45 mins away and the jobs would help a lot of the people here.

I like it. I certainly like the idea of removing all the "sharp" edges for concealed carry, I will look hard at it when I can put my hands on one.

A couple of things I like about it (cosmetically): it has that historic look similar to the Walther PP where the front end tapers down and the slide is low profile vs the blocky brick slide of most of todays pistols. And then there's the overhang at the rear like the Ruger SR's that puts the slide a bit more rearward and should eliminate any chance of getting bitten by the action.

TTAG doesn't like it at all. The R51 apparently has a few flaws that make it unreliable (and deadly) for a CCW, and Remington does NOT have a fix for it yet....

They aren't the only ones either. The initial reports from the show were all positive but I suspect they were cherry picked pistols. So many "as delivered to LGS" reviews have been just the reverse. Including the bug that if it's not reassembled right it will still pass a function test and may even fire... for a while but fail eventually for sure.

So who will bring back the Luger P08 toggle action?

Krieghoff did, but I dont have 30G's for a luger...

seriously though, with the drop in the price for CNC capabilty and potentially easier access to machine time, we may very well see home grown funny guns (Lugers, borchardts, Mausers, and god willing a webley fosbury) pop up in the next few years.

Really what we need is an organized group of gun enthusiasts to get together and buy a lathe and 3 axis mill.

Then simply pick a popular model ie a luger, get it blueprinted, preferably get several blueprinted to average out any wear that may affect dimensions. Once the setup is done (one time cost) the cost of the guns is merely a matter of material, tooling, and machine time.

Yeah the real world reports haven't been so good. When Shooting Illustrated gave the gun a raving review when almost all real world reviews said otherwise TTAG site called them out for it. Which led to Jim Wilson (Editor for NRA publications) to come to the SI authors defense in a liberal like fashion and basically issue a not so veiled physical threat to the TTAG Author. His reasoning was that the TTAG author didn't even know the SI Author so he should make judgements on him. Meanwhile he did the exact same thing and took it a step further by releasing what should be private personnel and then the not so veiled personal threat. IMHO the whole thing gave the R51 debacle a bit of a liberal smell. That sort of thing is what we've come to expect from the left. And now SI has basically issued a retraction of the review.

Initially I must admit it looked like an interesting gun but the fact that it can be reassembled improperly and still pass a function test only to fail at some random time soon later concerns me. I took the "I'll let the design simmer a little" stance though when it first came out and I'll do the same with the next revision that they say will start coming out in October.
