Would it be worth fooling with to set my old deer rifle up to shoot the odd long range match? I realize 700 is the go to action, but if this is reasonably viable, I think it could be a fun project.

Edit to add its in .308 and has a nice bore.

The way I understood it the 788 is more rigid, and simpler, where you'll run into issues is that there are few if any after market parts. Everything will have to be hand fitted handworked.

788 is a hell of an awesome action! trick is going to be all the extra goodies like triggers, magazines, etc... if it were ME I'd keep your 788 just like it is and go purchase a Savage rifle then find a good stock and you should be set to shoot about anything you want. Later,

Since you will be shooting the "odd long range match", I'd say give it a try. No point in sinking a lot of dollars in a new gun that may end up in the back of the safe. Any improvements you make if any at all will just make the 788 a better hunter.

Once you've shot a few matches and they set the hook, then look at a purpose built gun. See what the other competitors are shooting and go from there.
