I have a Remington 700 ADL in .30-06 from about 1970. It is in excellent condition except that it has the questionable "Walker" trigger. While hunting in the early 1970's with this rifle, I experienced an accidental discharge. I was raising the rifle to take a shot at a deer and when I pushed the safety forward to the off position, it discharged. Fortunately, no one was hurt. At that point, I put it in the safe and haven't fired it since.
I would like to be able to pass this rifle to my children safely. It is a beautiful bolt-action with blues finish and walnut stock, too nice to just destroy.
Can anyone make a recommendation for a replacement trigger that would not have the issues of the Walker trigger? I do not want the X-Mark Pro as it has reportedly had the same issues as the Walker. I have been looking at the Timney trigger, but I don't feel comfortable installing it myself.

Any suggestions, maybe even as to a gunsmith in the upstate would be able to install the new trigger?

I have heard good things about Bob @ Upstate Armory in Simpsonville, but I have never personally used him.

That is a fairly easy swap, so cost should be low to make the change.

Thanks for the suggestion. As I said, I do not feel comfortable in doing this for myself, but I will happily pay a fair price to get this rifle in safe condition.
BTW, I have relatives in Summerville, and visit there often. It is a beautiful area with lots of historical significance.
I have been to the ATF range, and I have to say they treated me and my family very well. Their memberships are the least expensive that I have seen anywhere. I wish PSA locations were that reasonable.
I also try to catch the Ladson and SCACA gun shows if I am in the area.

This thread is now obsolete. Remington has agreed to replace the trigger mechanisms on all 700's equipped with Walker triggers at no cost to the owner for shipping or rel. It also covers X-Mark Pro trigger mechanism manufactured from May 1, 2006 to April 9, 2014 that have not previously been replaced by Remington.
