Rem 597 stuck case

I purchased that .22LR Remington 597 that was on armslist yesterday with the "broken extractor."

Gun is in decent shape, dirty, but okay. The extractor, plunger, and extractor spring are missing. Got the rifle for $100, with 500 rounds and a BSA scope, so can't complain too much.

Anyway, got home and started to strip her down to see what the deal is and guess what I find? Yep, there's a case in chamber with the rim ripped right off it. I was unsure how to get it out without scratching the barrel, so I tried a cleaning rod. Wouldn't budge.

So I soaked her up in some CLP break-free and let it sit for ~20 minutes or so. Was then able to pull it out with a pair of needle nose.

Anyone ever seen this?

I would think if it ripped the rim of the case off, it wouldn't have broken the extractor. Or vice versa, if the case lodged and the extractor broke, I didn't think it would have the gumption to pull the rim of the case off.

I didn't think it would either, but the guy that had the rifle was clueless to how it functioned. So when it quit, he just put it in the closet. So this is the result of the last round through it when the extractor went bye-bye along with plunger and spring. So the rim broke off and the extractor broke at the same time.

Just weird. Surely I'll get her back together and running fine. Bore looks great with the exception of some carbon and copper fouling, but it should clean up fine. Action was SUPER DIRTY, but cleaned up nice. I have not disassembled the bolt yet, but will do so this evening.

Got some new stuff to use for a paint job, so I'm gonna duracoat the stock this evening I hope. Parts should be here from Brownell's by week's end, so I should have a functioning rifle by the weekend. For a total of $119 with 500 rounds of ammo I can't complain too much.

It makes me wonder if the previous owner never cleaned it, then one day it was too dirty to function causing the broken parts due to a stuck case or something.

That wouldn't surprise me in the least. Thing was FILTHY!

My 597 functioned horribly until it spit out the extractor, then it quit functioning completely  . I replaced it with one from VQ and now it'll run great all day long.

I think you're on the right path. The chamber was so dirty and the casing was jammed in there so tight, the path of least resistance was tearing the case apart and either the extractor was already in its way to failing or couldn't take on that job, and it failed also.

PapaBear, give the rear of the chamber a good look at also. If the previous owner dry fired it a lot it'll peen the edge of the chamber over and create extraction issues. It's an easy fix if you have a chamber iron.

I'll check it. Forgot to update but got the new parts installed, cleaned and lubed her, put it back together and she functions flawlessly.

Not bad for a barely over $100 rifle, lol.

Can't believe I never updated this.

I have put about 1500 rounds or so through this thing since the "fix" and have had ZERO issues with it. It eats anything you load into it and is a blast to shoot.

Here's it's rattle can, beater woods gun camo job I did shortly after making sure it functioned. This gun resides behind the seat of the farm truck, and has been relegated to beater duty.
