Well lets see if I can keep the rambling to a minimum.

I am trying to decide on AR vs AK style rifles, the debate is a dead horse and I could spend a month more reading. What it comes down to is I want two rifles both semi-auto that I can reload for.

Rifles will be used for plinking, hunting, and competition, though I do not expect to win many competitions I mainly want the fun and practice.

Just taking a guess but I am betting the 223/308 is going to be easier to find reloading supplies for. While the 7.62X39/7.62x54R is going to be easier to find good deals on surplus ammo.

So what do you all think?

.223 is the way to go. It's just too popular to beat. If you want cheap cheap ammo get a 5.45x39mm AK74 or similar barrel for your AR15. Spam can ammo for that caliber is under $.15/round.

The Russian rounds use a .311 bullet rather than the rest of the world's .308 bullet. That really limits your options.
