Recomendations on having a Rem 700 barrel cut down?

Last year I picked up one of the Dick's Sporting Goods Remington 700 SPS Varminters with the intention of slowly dressing it up some. It shoots great out of the box, and I'm a little hesitant to mess with it because it does work well even with it's non-free floating stock. It is a 26" barreled rifle though, and that is a little much for a walking around rifle. I am looking at having the barrel cut down to 21". Both to make it more handy and to lighten it up a little. Looking for a good smith some where in SC or NC that can cut, do a nice recrown, and put something on the end of the barrel so it won't rust. Looking for a really nice job on this, cause as I said, it is a nice shooter now. Don't want to take anything away from that at all.

By the way, I am in the Upstate SC area, but willing to travel some, or will ship.

Thanks,
Shawn

Thanks guys for the quick response. Bob, I will be giving you a call sometime today or this evening. Also lower parts of the state are not necessarily out of the question. My fiance's folks live in Charleston, so I am down there every few months. What would be the turn around time on something like this also?

And thanks guys, but not looking to really to do a suppressor, This will mostly just be a target gun with a little blind hunting on the side. Don't think I am gonna loose that much velocity with cutting the barrel since it is so long to begin with. Can't make up my mind on 21" or 22" ha ha.

Thanks,
Shawn

just for your info the rem 700 tactical models are 20" i have an LTR 20" and with my handloads have put 3 shots in an inch at 200 yds . it carries a whole lot better than the 26" version.

Yeah, I looked at the tactical models before I ended up getting the varminter. That's how I know how much more handy the shorter barrels are, I just couldn't pass up the deal on this one, and in the end I could have a nicer rifle for the same money. However, I want this to still be a long range capable rifle. I already have lighter mid range guns, but a 26" barrel on a .308 is a bit much I think.

Just wanted to give a shout out to Bob at Upstate Armory Group. I did end up getting in contact with him a couple weeks ago, and drove down to his shop to drop off my 700. He was nice enough to bring it up to the Greenville gun show today so I could pick it up from. Very impressed with how it turned out. I had 5 inches cut off the barrel and while he had it, went ahead and had him do a little trigger work on it to lighten it up some. Like I said, it turned out great. The barrel and crown look better than it did out of the factory. The trigger, has a very nice light break to it, with absolutely no creep at all. Will definitely be using Bob for all my future gunsmithing needs. Now for some gun porn:
