Recoil magazine debacle

They are expressing a view held my all to many who claim to be pro-gun. Those perfectly willing to stand by while others have their firearms taken so long as they get to keep theirs. Just look at the anger expressed on some gun forums when open carry is brought up. Or the folks who support bans on machine guns, assault rifles, ten round mags or anything else that does not affect them.

They just posted a retraction

I’d like to address the comments regarding what I wrote in the MP7A1 article in RECOIL issue 4. First and foremost, I’d like to apologize for any offense that I have caused with the article. With the benefit of hindsight, I now understand the outrage, and I am greatly saddened that it was initiated by my words. Especially since, I am an unwavering supporter of 2nd Amendment Rights. I’ve chosen to spend a significant part of both my personnel [sic] and professional life immersed in this enthusiasm, so to have my support of individuals’ rights called into doubt is extremely unfortunate. With that said, I retract what I wrote in the offending paragraph within this article. It should have had been presented with more clarity.
In the article, I stated some information that was passed on to me about why the gun is not available for civilian purchase. By no means did I intend to imply that civilians are not responsible, nor do we lack the judgment to own such weapons, if I believed anything approaching this, clearly I would lead a much different life. I also mentioned in the article that the gun had no sporting purpose. This again, was information passed on to me and reported in the article without the necessary additional context. I believe everything published in RECOIL up to this point (other than this story), demonstrates we clearly understand and completely agree that guns do not need to have a sporting purpose in order for them to be rightfully available to civilians. In retrospect, I should have presented this information in a clearer manner. Although I can understand the manufacturer’s stance on the subject, it doesn’t mean that I agree with it.
Again, I acknowledge the mistakes I made and for them I am truly sorry.
Sincerely,
Jerry Tsai

RECOIL

Poorly-written handwaving. I'm not sure how "we all know that’s technology no civvies should ever get to lay their hands on," could plausibly be him passing on what he'd been told by the manufacturer.

Though falling back on "HK: U SUCK AND WE HATE U LOL" is probably one of the better damage control strategies they could have picked.

He's written 2 retractions/explanations as an attempt at damage control.

Both show that he's just not a 'gun guy'

I suppose if RECOIL replaces him swiftly, they could save their publication.

I flipped through a Recoil magazine recently. The mag is aesthetically pleasing, but it appears to be written for people who aren't through and through gun guys. More of an Esquire type gun magazine. I put it back on the rack. I've seen statements from several firearms companies stating that they have pulled their advertising from Recoil.

The magazine was cool and edgy. It had pics and articles that were way ahead of the current American rifleman type stuff that's been done for years.

Their statements are unfortunate and whether or not they feel that the general public should or should not have access to certain types of guns cannot be made public in any way unless it is strictly in favor of every man, woman, and child having every gun they could ever want.

I agree with Jesse, I think there is a place in the market for a gun rag that is more Maxim than American Rifleman. Less preachy and more entertaining. I think it is great that they are trying to pick up the middle of the road, suburban, mid twenty's to 30 something demographic and expose them to the gun culture in a way that is more in line with their interests.

Some of the articles may have been a little powder-puff and could have used more substance from someone more engaged in the shooting sports, but the general tone was edgy and entertaining.

It was an unfortunate choice of words made by someone who evidently does not have an understanding of the deep seated political ramifications most gun enthusiasts associate with making any type of concession on second amendment issues. But in my opinion it's even more unfortunate that people have blown a single statement this far out of proportion and that it may ultimately lead to the end of a publication that was in a good position to help promote the shooting culture to the masses. Who's really winning here?

just my two cents, for what it's worth....

This article reminds me of the tv celeb larry weishuhn, a few years back that made the comment AR's are for the military, and shouldn't be in the field.
The backlash from that caused his sponsors to bail, his tv appearances went away, etc. he laid low for a year, then came back talking about what an epiphany he had just been through, and the AR is now the greatest gun on earth. :D
