PSF Swap Meet

How about, "Don't ask, Dont tell?"

Just lay your stuff for sale on the shooting benches near you and if you see something you like ask about it. Almost everything is for sale for the right price anyway so just start a conversation. If its more than trading some 9mm for some 45 then go out to the nearest parking lot and swap cash.

IMHO discretion is (nearly) always an acceptable answer.

The problem with that especially at Philsons is the ranger stopping by and sometimes they aren't always in uniform.

Well, like all good sounding ideas, having a swap meet at Boggy head is just that, a good SOUNDING idea.

I spoke with Amy at DNR (very nice lady) about our idea for a shoot and swap at Boggy head, and got some of the requirements for this permit.

1) You must plan your gathering with Jana DuPree at DNR in advance and get approval for said gathering.
2) You will be required to have liability insurance covering the event.
3) You will be required to have a legal form signed that indemnifies DNR of any and all responsibility.
4) You will pay a special use fee.
5) You will pay 5% of ALL REVENUE to DNR.
6) If you get this far, there may be other requirements.

#6 is not a joke, she was trying to remember all the requirements and didn't have the guidelines handy. DNR discourages these types of gatherings at the ranges as space is at a premium (as we all know). DNR requests that you hold the meet elsewhere and then enjoy a day of shooting at the ranges. Money cannot change hands at the ranges.

Coming together as a group of guys to shoot did not seem to have the stringent requirements of having a swap meet. I guess its because it is a shooting range and people shoot here accepting that risk. People do not shop at a shooting range which is why the insurance is required.

Again, I wish to emphasize that the DNR folks I spoke with were very understanding of our idea and were really nice to speak with. Unfortunately, they have requirements that would make this a very complicated event to get approved and organized with regard to the small size of what we hoped to achieve.

Let me do some checking, I may have a place on 17A between Moncks Corner and Macedonia where we could meet to shop and swap.

While I know the intent is good you guys need to let Pops handle DNR, He has a good relationship with them and we don't want to jeopardize it.

Pops always sets things up with Jana.
He and I try to make all the range clean ups.
I could not make the last one due to a death in the family but Pops was there.

Jana is a very good person to deal with.
I sent photos of last year's ShootzenFest to her and she wrote an article adn submitted it ot the Forestry service internal newsletter.
They appreciate that we try to police after ourselves and that we respect the ranges.

I have another contact at the Philson Range. I've actually met both of them. Both are very helpful about our shoots.
Interestingly Jana doesn't shoot. As I understand she never has had an interest in shooting.

I heard from the U.S. Forestry Service and was informed that national forests ranges are maintained and governed by the DNR in the state which it lies. The state DNR sets the rules and I see Pops has posted the SC DNR rules for all to see.

I am very familiar with the "old guy who picks up brass"at Philson's.His name is Chuck and he's a kind of different sort. He's certainly NOT the one to believe on what is lawful or not there.I always got along good with him when I frequented Philson's.
He has quite a few health problems.Keep him at a" bit of arm's length "so to speak and you get along with him ok.He will save and sell you brass if you tell him what you want.

Count me in. I've got lots of stuff I don't need anymore.
Holsters, clips, brass, bayonet, etc.

Schultz is right ;)

We wanted to have a swap meet at the second ShootzenFest (this is number 5 by the way) and we did all the investigation then and decided that they really don't want it and the hold all the face cards.

We've built a good relationship with the ranger service and we need that relationship to keep having the ShootzneFests at their ranges.
It would be very easy for them to say we have too many people to be safe and put a stop to it.

I have bee in touch Lisa Marie at Belt Training about using their private range for a shoot. We could have a swap meet there easy enough.
Belt Training hosts the Glock All Girl Shootout with over 100 shooters participating last year. They are hosting currently an event featuring Massad Ayoob.

Now, having said that Janna told me that if we sold something away from the shoot and delivered it at the range that is OK as long as
no money changes hands at the range. This seems to be the litmus test the ranger uses.

We have a buy/sell section, we could make a special Swap meet section for the next shoot and everybody post what they have up for grabs and make "arraingements" to meet at range. Swapping stuff for stuff seems to be OK.
I guess the bottom line is that if two guys want to look at something in the trunk of there car or what ever that is their business, but they won't allow us to have tables and stuff with price tags and so forth.

;)

Maybe we should call it a tailgate party! I was more thinking of a way for everybody to display their unwanted items, possibly exchange info, then do the deed at a later time and place. I'm sorry; I'm a yard sale junkie. Bring those boxes of holsters and doodads. Who knows what somebody else might need.

Maybe we could make it an unwritten rule to bring all your unwanted items for display, but a written rule for no cash to change hands. Window shopping only.

Bigfutz I know you would really like to do this but its not worth the risk of jeopardizing shootzenfest. We have a good repor with the rangers as Pops pointed out and your not going to know if there is one there during the shoot or not as not all the rangers wear uniforms.

Shultz is correct
we do not want to screw up a good thing here.
I suggest we list our goodies on this forum, make the deal and square up off-site
although I don't see a problem with trades on site provided they were arranged aforehand
