Judge for yourself - but the headline and lead sentence for the article show you the reporter's bias...

Headline - Taking aim at new market: Machine gun rentals at a suburb near you

Lead sentence - Renting machine guns to strangers was not part of Alex Perkins? original career plan, but now that he?s running the new Quickshot shooting range in West Ashley, it?s a regular part of his day.

I work in Public Relations...it's my job. This is a jab at having a gun range in "the burbs."

It's veiled...but it is there.

Here is a link to the article...leave a comment.

I thought the article was a little slanted as well. It seems like they are trying to stir up a public outrage in the comments section by making it seem like its in the middle of a quaint neighborhood. Its West Ashley! Those people need to arm themselves and be able to put quality hits on target.

I talked to Alex about this and it was pretty much "what can you do?". It was interesting that in the article it seemed every job Alex has had since he started working was highlighted. I don't know if this was a subtle "stability" thing or not.

I've spent a lot of time there since the day the range opened and there have been no small amount of sub gun rentals. There have also been a surprising number of individuals and couples who say they've never shot before. I think all concerned understand that there are many eyes on this enterprise and as employees we must avoid or prevent any situation that could reflect badly on the range or on gun advocates and enthusiasts in general. And as it should be Safety is at the top of the list of considerations. We had a safety meeting last Saturday and will continue to have them on a regular basis.

And for the record, no one is given a sub gun to shoot on their own. A range employee is with them at all times to ensure that range rules are followed and the weapon is operated in a safe manner.

Concealed carry classes have started and the first one was held Saturday.

Also, while I am a part time employee there, nothing I say should be construed as representing "official" Quickshot policy. If anyone wants information from the horse's mouth, call the range.

Here is a much better article about the new range.
I'm excited about renting one of those sub-guns and blowing through $50-60 worth of ammo in a minute or two.

Oh you'll do it much quicker than that. And bring a camera, it will probably be the biggest smile you'll ever have on your face...well, second biggest.

I'm waiting for a folding mechanism to come in for my S-12 so I can try out the Enidine Shot Shock tube I have...if it comes in Thursday I'll be there, any idea when you'll be there?

If I can get the oil changed and grass mowed in time we plan on being there around 11am when they open.

Will I be okay if I bring an AR and a .308 with FMJ's? I know some indoor ranges only let you shoot the high powered stuff if you use frangible ammo. I'd hate to bring out my toys and have to leave 'em in the car.

As far as I know there is no stipulation with regard to what type of round is allowed, only the caliber. I've heard Alex say more than once rifle calibers up to and including .308, 7.62 x 54r is close enough so it's allowed also. The only stipulation with regard to type of round is with 12 gauge, slugs only no "shot" of any kind.

But if you want to be sure, call the range at 843-225-2868

The article even made it to Fark.com when it came out (weird news/non-news aggregator site). Most of the comments were positive. As I noted then, ATP has been renting subguns and M16s for a while too - not that I'm plugging ATP over, well, anyone. Just stating a fact - that this business model isn't brand spanking new. When I first moved back in '08 an Air Force buddy and I went and spent several hundred dollars drawing smiley faces with an MP5 :)

Glad to see there's a new range in the Lowcountry. With Boggy Head and Twin Ponds both ~1 hour away, ATP being 25 minutes, and Trader World being kinda sketchy these days (sorry guys), having one closer to downtown is a boon. If I can find out who is running my old Military Law Club at the law school I'll see if I can send them en masse down there for a shooting day - we used to do them at ATP but the distance from downtown was a dealbreaker to many folks.

City paper just did an article. Apparently she's about to go deaf and the spent brass wants to take her eyes out. I love when she says " the range officer told me to take the safety off. elephant dung just got real."

When I was at CSOL our club (Military Law Society) used to do an Evidence Weapons Safety seminar, put on by the Summerville PD. They'd bring in a bunch of each type of commonly seen (and seized) guns, show how to safe them, and pass them around. I'd say about 90% of the students had never seen a gun outside of TV.

Same sort of reaction. It was priceless. :)

Those seminars were always packed. The target shooting days, not so much. Oh well. At least the SC Bar has a CWP/CLE class that gets *some* lawyers out of the office.

its amazing how many people have no education when it comes to guns and no clue what the 2nd ammendment means.

not all, not all, but these are some of the people voting to continue our present leadership. just blind.
