I think I'm all set on optics for rifle and pistol, but just started to think about what kind of dot I need for shotgun in open... and came to the conclusion that I need more info.

I'm looking for something rugged enough to handle the recoil, and something that can provide relatively low bore axis and something large enough to not interfere with fliers of course... but should I be concerned about something that can also be used with slugs? Most of what I've seen from shotgun is a lot of point shooting, so I'm not even sure how 'important' a good dot solution is for the shotgun.

It would be helpful to understand what the leading choices are in Open shotgun are as well as what one particular dot offers compared to the other leaders. Top 3 or 4 in Open is all I'm curious about.

If it matters, I'm looking for a solution that will go on a Firebird Precision Akdal MKA 1919.

Cheers,

Rob

Like Leupold usaully, but did not care for the Deltapoint. I had one and the lock screws on that thing are not my favorite. Leupold was great as always and replaced it, but I sold it after trying the cmore STS.

Burris... hmm...

I've not used a Trijicon RMR before will look into it.

I put an Insight MRDS on mine. Three main reasons - 3.5 MOA dot, click adjustable, and you can replace the battery without taking it off the firearm.

What's the scoop on that sight? It's not cheap. Is it good? I'm not familiar with Insight whatsoever.

I really like it. They aren't cheap for sure, but they're mil spec so they should last.

Here's some specs that I lifted off the internet -

The MRDS is a lightweight, ruggedized reflex sight that mounts to many existing optics as well as MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny and Weaver-style rails utilizing widely available aftermarket mounts.

The MRDS is available in a non-reflective black or tan finish with either a 3.5 MOA or 7.0 MOA dot size and is easily adjustable for elevation or windage with 1 MOA positive click adjustments. The MRDS features an auto adjusting dot intensity but also offers the operator a manual dot intensity adjustment with four (4) brightness settings.

Like many of Insight’s products, the MRDS is designed to not only meet but exceed military durability specifications for equipment used by special operations personnel under extreme combat conditions. The lens of the MRDS is made from a lightweight, impact resistant polymer with an anti-reflective coating. Its rugged housing is molded from advanced polymers reducing weight without sacrificing operational durability.

The MRDS has been waterproofed to 66 feet for 2 hours, frozen in ice, drop tested, subjected to a 48-hour salt fog, tested to withstand vibration, submitted to extreme temperature shock and shot on a variety of firearms for thousands of rounds. It has an operational temperature range of -40o C to 49o C and passes the MIL-STD 810F environmental testing protocols.

Powered by a single 1632 battery that allows the unit to operate up to 1-year in Auto mode, the MRDS weighs just 0.85 ounces including battery. The top-load battery compartment design means no loss of zero when changing the battery.

Features:
  • On/Off â€" Powers up in 0.5 seconds
  • 3.5 MOA or 7.0 MOA
  • Up To 1 Year Run Time
  • Variable auto dot intensity
  • Manual dot intensity control with 4 settings
  • Top load battery with no loss of zero
  • Mounts via existing aftermarket mounting systems
  • 1 MOA click adjustable for elevation and windage
  • Impact resistant polymer lens with proprietary abrasion resistant, anti-reflective coating
  • Waterproof up 66 feet for 2 hours
  • Meets MIL-STD 810G
  • Operates in temperatures ranging from -40o C to 49o C
  • Dimensions: L 1.9″ x W 1.1″ x H 1.2″
  • Weighs 0.85oz including battery
  • Uses (1) 1632 battery
  • Low battery indicator
