Oil Filter Silencer

Eh, $200 tax stamp for a cruddy suppressor? No thanks.

Then again if you're willing to chance 10 years in the PMITA Fed Pen they might be cool. ;)

It does work, but I wouldn't waste a tax stamp on the adapter. The adapters are available in several places without a stamp. I see this only as a viable option after TSHTF.

why cant you make a suppressor and screw it to the adapter?

if the adapter is the legal part it doesnt have to be an oil filter screwed on.

18 U.S.C. ? 921(a)(24) The terms ?firearm silencer? and ?firearm muffler? mean any device for silencing, muffling, or diminishing the report of a portable firearm, including any combination of parts, designed or redesigned, and intended for use in assembling or fabricating a firearm silencer or firearm muffler, and any part intended only for use in such assembly or fabrication.

Emphasis by me. If you were to buy the adapter by proper transfer, you cannot add other parts to it to make it an operable silencer. Same reason why an individual can't replace the innards of a commercially manufactured silencer. Every part of a suppressor is itself legally a suppressor.

It was my understanding based on that US code, RotaryMike, that if one DID purchase an oil filter suppressor adapter, they'd have to get the new filters installed on the adapter by their 07/02 SOT in order to remain completely legal.

Not that I am in any way shape or form condoning this, but Gr8shot's post makes me thing of the "Solvent Trap adapters" that attach to a threaded barrel. No tax stamp required because it's "for cleaning". Like that one guy that sold Suppress-On brand Drop In Auto Sears in the Shotgun News for a couple decades before the ATF caught up to it...people who buy one of those will get a visit from the ATF at some point. May not be soon, but they will. They ATF is going around collecting all those "legal" drop in sears bought over the years; there are threads about it online and the owner of that company got hit with like 100 counts of transferring a machine gun illegally.

Generally that would be true. However, the 'main tube' is defined by the BATFE as the primary component of the suppressor, and not allowed to be replaced or modified. So you'd have to use the same oil filter forever. Even with an external tube that the oil filter fits in (like a coozy) each oil filter would have to be serialized and thus, each one would be a different silencer.

No, the restrictions around silencers are pretty tightened up and remember, the onus is upon the charged to prove innocence when dealing with an Agency (all agencies, such as EPA, DOE, you name it) decision as opposed to straight criminal law.

Knowing that, the thread adapters are IMHO bait.

I think it sucks. Suppressor regulation should be pretty simple - if they want to specify that you cannot make your own but have to buy one that one rule would obviate the need for all the technical rules about them. Made by permitted silencer manufacturer = legal. Not made that way = not legal.

But since they don't want to (or can't with the political underpinnings) come right out and say that, they regulate and tax the procedures to death.

I was thinking of it as a novelty, screwing a FRAM onto the end of a plinker .22, however, not knowing the laws, I'd have to send this to ATF for a ruling before I'd even think of ordering one, despite them saying it is 'legal'

NEW INFORMATION:
You legal eagles got it right! What a misleading ad. The filter IS part of the suppressor and is serial numbered. If you change the can, it has to go BACK to the manufacturer to be replaced LEGALLY

"Cadiz Gun Works manufactures and sells the Econo-Can Suppressor.

This Econo Can Suppressor is 1/2x28 thread size, which is registered as a 22 caliber with overall length of can 4.5 inches, 3 inch diameter. It will fit various manufactures and models as long as the barrel threading is 1/2x28 RH. Most common is 223, 22 caliber and some 9mm guns.

The Econo Can Suppressor comes as a complete unit with the oil filter attached, serial numbered and registered with ATF/NFA.

The cost is $85.00 which includes free USPS S&H for the registered Econo can silencer. The Econo can is available and can ship to a FFL/SOT dealer in your state on a form 3. We will need a signed copy of their license. FFL/SOT may be emailed to [email protected]. If you need help locating a dealer, let me know. Make sure Registered Class 3 Suppressors are legal in your state before ordering.

After we know which dealer is doing your transfer, and we receive their FFL and SOT paperwork, at that point you would do an ATF form 4 and submit to the ATF/NFA Branch with $200.00 for your Tax Stamp to get it registered in your name or Trust. Telia here at Cadiz Gun Works or your local transfer dealer can help you with filling out that paperwork (Form 4).

The Econo Can Suppressor currently comes in 3 different sizes. 1/2x28 thread size, which is registered as a 22 caliber, 14x1 LH thread size that is registered as a 7.62x39 or 30 caliber and 5/8x24 threading which we register as 300ACC Blackout. SEE OUR OTHER LISTINGS.

If or when you need to change the filter out, the ATF/NFA rules says it needs to come back to the original manufacture, which Cadiz Gun Works is. The cost is $25.00. The complete Econo-Can Suppressor can be shipped directly to us, for gunsmithing, which would be replacement/rehab/repair of the oil filter, with the serial # remarked, and documented as being replaced/rehabbed/repaired. The completed Econo Can Suppressor can be sent back to you at your address on your NFA Tax Stamp Form. You do not need to go though a dealer for gunsmithing services. The life of the oil filter varies depending on caliber used and bullet type. (ex. AR15=300-500 rds)"

I have no idea why anyone in their right mind would buy this unless they had more money than they knew what to do with and just wanted to see what it was all about.

I think even in a SHTF situation it'd be worthless compared to a real silencer considering you have to pay a tax on both to obtain presently.

If you need a SHTF silencer for an AR, a 2-liter coke bottle fits on an A2 birdcage pretty well and will quell one shot, if using subsonic ammo.

Not that I've ever tried this or anything, at least not anywhere the laws of the US apply.
