I just got back from NYC. My colleagues out there could not believe I was able to own the firearms I own, take the training classes I’ve had or compete in USPSA / 3 Gun.

Fun place to visit. Wouldn't ever live there.

Looking at this thread, a NYPD officer is giving out info about the training their department gets. I saw lots of officers with guns. It’s a shame how little they train if this is valid.

BTW, I drove into Manhattan Sat night at 5:00pm. If you ever go to NYC ... do not do that.

It ain't much better here, folks. The State only requires officer to qualify annually on their 25 round course. I'll post that below. Some Departments go above the annual qualification requirement. Most qualify twice a year. That means the average officer, who passes both quals, shoots 50 rounds a year. Some shoot more, most do not. Here is the course as mandated by CLEET:

25 yards: 2 shots kneeling w/barricade in 5 seconds;
25 yards: 2 standing on support side of barricade in 5 seconds;
25 yards: 2 standing on strong side of barricade in 5 seconds;
15 yards: 1 standing, 1 kneeling in 6 seconds
7 yards: 4 shots in 4 seconds
5 yards: 3 to the body and 1 to the face in 4 seconds
3 yards: 3 rounds followed by 3 rounds support hand only in 8 seconds
1 yard: 3 rounds in 2.5 seconds

Need 18 shots to land for a minimum passing score of 72%. Scoring area is approximately the "C" zone on an USPSA target.

So a 1.90 bill drill is above average for police? I must share this with my anti gun coworkers who state that the police are incredible shots.

Folks, its not much difference in the Army Reserve.
The Ponca Range puts on a 2 day qualification for a members reserve unit.
According to them, they get 40 rounds a year for qualification. Period.
When they go through our program, they get to shoot 1 1/2 hours per station, shooting .22 rimfire, .40, .45, .223, and for the grand finale', they get to put two rounds through a Barrette .50 BMG. They get to shoot a TON of ammo. Guess what, the Gubberment won't pay for it.
Our club member pays for it out of his pocket. The club members volunteer to be instructors.

After finishing 6 1/2 years of active duty, and joining the reserves to finish with 16 years total, we used to shoot hundreds if not thousands of rounds at summer camp and at weekend training sessions at a private range.

During the Clinton years, the gubberment took all of the firearms from the Armory's, and its gone down hill from there.

And this folks is why my eyes disappear into the back of my skull every time I hear the phrase "trained police officer" in the context of gun control.

Troy, I had this exact thing explained to me by a retired sheriff not long ago. The difference in qualification requirements from lets say back in the 50's to now and the frequency of each qualification is quite stark. A couple of the guys around were guards in the federal prison system. The impression I gained from them in this conversation is that their superiors explicitly do not want them training on their own, practicing, shooting comps or anything. They made it sound like there was an "unwritten policy" that if they did, their superiors didn't want to know about it. Truly sad if true...

I had a conversation with a trusted police officer who shall remain nameless. I expressed my feeling that while shooting is an incredibly small part of an officers job it is necessary for them to be able to run the guns they carry at a high level because (and I believe this is how he put it) when shooting is necessary it has to be done quickly and proficiently because "its go time."

Dunno if this adds to the conversation but there it is.

I believe he was referring to the traffic situation. Not referring to feeling unsafe. Oklahoma traffic is a little different. If it take us more than 15 minutes to get 10 miles, we call that a traffic jam.

yeah with all the costrution its a killer but still the invitation is still stands for who ever whants to its always good to meet a new friend from a difrent state

I met a buddy in Staten Island for lunch then drove in through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel. Ended up at Broadway and Canal then took the Holland Tunnel back to NJ ... was staying in Basking Ridge. Lets just say I was glad I had an empty bottle in the car because it took 2 hours to drive out.

On another day I parked at Secaucus Junction and took the train in, then took the subways around. Much better and I'll do that.
