Just wondering what most have done as far as obtaining a non-resident CWP so that we can carry in other states that do not have resiprocity with SC. It appears that Utah, Flordia and Vermont are the three primary sources for NR CWPs. Anyone with any experience with any of these found one to be better or worse, what about turnaround once submitted, costs, etc.

I'd be interested, too. Just moved to SC, getting my resident permit.

I'm likely to go FL as you only need a "nationally recognized" course (NRA, etc) and the fingerprints / paperwork / fee. It seems that as long as the local (SC) class it taught by an NRA instructor, it would qualify. Utah requires a Utah-specific class and, while that is taught locally, it is not the same and you must have 8 hours of additional Utah-specific instruction. This is from the guy at Threat Management Group I talked to.

Both let you carry in GA / AL. Don't know anything about VT

I personally got my non-resident permit from Arizona. A certificate of training from a SC class is sufficient (or completion of a SC Hunter's education class). Just mail in your info and the check.

Utah only requires a 4 hour class.

I just took it last weekend at ATP. It is nothing really. Just discuss Utah's laws and then fill out application and take finger prints. Then wait up to 60 days for Utah to send it to you

We're doing the Arizona permits too. IIRC, they have a pretty high state reciprocity ratio compared to most other state permits, plus they only cost $60, along with a photocopy of your valid state CWP.

When I lived in Virginia, I got a Florida permit because Georgia didn't recognize the VA permit. I would have preferred to just OC and forget about any permits, but there are some stupid states that don't allow OC at all... :?

The Florida permit is honored pretty much everywhere I'm liable to drive to.

According to this, the AZ non-resident permit isn't recognized in Florida. I'm kinda shocked.

Check out Hew Hampshire. The application is on their state website. They require $100 and a copy of your S.C. permit. It's good for 4 years and picks up New Hampshire and 5 more states.

Yeah, just moved from Virginia. Open carried alot, never worried if my shirt was tucked in or someone saw my gun printing. Sometimes, especially in the heat, just OC'd for comfort. It's been quite an adjustment here in SC. What to we need to do here to get OC? Not trying to hijack, but VA had a very strong state house presence (see http://www.vcdl.org/ run by a guy named Philip Van Cleave). What do we have here that's similar?

Thanks.

I went with the Utah CWP. The course was simple. 4 hours of class and a test. No shooting involved, not that I would have minded. Fingerprint cards and a check, and about 6 weeks later I had the permit. I enjoy being able to carry in Georgia.

There are some minor differences in the Utah permit, but you just need to make sure you comply with whatever state's laws you are carrying in. Utah has a stipulation that a revolver has to be carried on an open cylinder and a semi-auto must not have a round in the chamber. I thought that was odd, but I will probably not be carrying in Utah any time soon.

The instructor I used was in Summerville, Dale Cox. Retired police chief...very good guy. His rate was cheaper than anything else around here. If anyone wants his info, let me know. I took his course already having my SC CWP but he does offer the SC CWP + Utah as a package deal.

i wonder why you had a test? Utah does not require a test.

Short answer... Nothing. I'm still a member of VCDL under the belief that one day, I'll be able to convince about a dozen or so of their most active members to relocate south.

I hope you have some patience.

You are right...there was no formal written test. I was trying to think back and differentiate my SC CWP course versus the Utah course. The instructor did an oral "check on learning" to see if I'd retained the key portions. That's all. The Utah permit was easier to obtain than the SC CWP...makes me wonder why we have such low reciprocity in SC. Is it that other states' licensing procedures are too easy, and SC doesn't want to recognize them?

Well, sign me up when that happens. I think the "lobbying day" they had probably did a world of good. Grassroots contact with concerned citizens and all that. I'd be willing to drive to Columbia with some like-minded folk.

Thanks for the reply.
