So what is a good gun to start out with for running a basic beginner type match. I've never been but think I'd like to try it this year. Maybe a steel challenge or something at USSA. Tulsa is the closest match to me I'm sure. Anyhow, I'm curious. Thanks Jason

I'm a newb too so I will answer the best I can (who cares if we are a cartoon). I believe the best gun to shoot in a match is the one you carry, in the holster that you carry it in.

If you don't carry (shame on you) then there is a division for just about any gun you prefer to shoot. I'd say choose the gun you are comfortable with then go find a division to shoot it.

I carry everyday! So I guess a glock 22 will work then. I don't know but I suppose I can manage with it. I don't think that my iwb would be good for comp and I ain't gonna use my duty rig.

IWB carry is perfect for this match. Quite a few of the shooters use IWB. Actually I think you can use your duty rig but you have to be in full uniform (I might be wrong about that)

There are several guys that bring their duty rigs or IWB holsters. It jut depends on what you want to get out of a match. Some guys want to become fast and more proficient with their duty rig. Some guys want to be good with the carry gear. Neither of those setups is going to be fast as somebody's ghost holster and magnetic mag pouches but it won't matter at first because you will be busy learning the rules and scoring.

There is an advantage in some sports to having race style competition guns which is why we all have different comp and carry guns. Start out with what you have and see what direction it takes you. I can almost guarantee that if when you decide you like competitive shooting after your first stage you will be calculating when you can get to the next match and how you can purchase more competition oriented guns, gear, holsters, reloading machines, shooting carts, or whatever you may need/want.

Ah ok, well I was just figuring that all the matches would be more speed oriented! That's good to hear. I think that it would be fantastic to use either my duty setup or off duty carry setup, just to get better with both under pressure. That helps a lot. Thanks

Do that then once you get good with that stuff you will be ready to try to win your division and you'll be buying all the race guns and space guns like the rest of us.

Just my opinion for first match. IDPA matches are great for first time match shooters. I went last Jan and watched a USPSA match. I was very impressed but also a bit overwhelmed (hope I spelled that right :) ) While there I talked to a couple of IDPA shooters and looked up some IDPA stuff on the internet. Because of how IDPA is broken down and the limitations on modifications I would suggest IDPA. All you need is a gun, holster, 3 mags, some sort of cover garment, and about 100rds give or take. The biggest drawback to IDPA is there are way more rules than Steel Challenge or USPSA.

I appreciate the info guys. I'm reading more and more on match rules for different matches. Trying to get an idea of what I need to have and what I would need to bring to be legal, safe, and not look like a moron! Of course I still need to get some ammo loaded, but that STI Spartan is looking pretty dang good too!

It's almost impossible to be "ready" with all your gear and all the rules before you come shoot a match. I don't think I knew what division I was shooting in until about match #3. There us just too much going on and too many rules. The big thing to learn is the safety the rest you learn while BSing in-between shooters. Gran your stuff and get to a match. The sooner the better in my opinion.

Yeah gotta get some ammo squared away first! I gotta get some parts paid for so people don't send Quido to break my legs! No really though I gotta get some 40 loaded or something
