So I have been shooting USPSA (in small local baby matches ;-) for a year now. So much fun when I actually have time to go! I have been interested in AR's and was looking into buying one when a bushmaster xm-15 E2S fell into my lap at a very good deal. It was a great price and has barely been shot, so I got it (and a sig sauer scorpion 1911) since my husband wasn't objecting (yes, in our family I'm the one that gets in trouble for buying guns! My question is--what modifications should I make? The handguard is not the one with flat rails on it, so I will probably change that, and I don't love the handle on it, so I may take it off. Trying to decide on what sights I want--red dot, scope?? I would like to eventually dabble in 3-gun, but I have plenty of time to upgrade slowly while I learn how to shoot the thing proficiently!! Any advice for the AR virgin??

What are you wanting to use it for? As John said, modifications depend on the intended use. I wouldn't change much until you get familiar with it and figure out what you want to do. I do like red dots, though...

How do I post pics???? Still trying to figure out this forum. But it looks much like the third one down in your pic, except it has a handle where the rail is (and where the back sight is)

Right now the purpose is to learn how to shoot it......really well. Then move to 3-gun, so keeping that in mind with any modifications I make. I'm not a hunter, mainly because I can't keep my mouth shut long enough to hunt!!

Bad place to ask this question.. I think we all love spending someone elses money. When you get comfortable with your gun then look no farther than the great sponsors of this site. They have great prices and will treat you awesome. The sky is the limit.

I just have to spend slowly so the husband doesn't kill me! :butcher:

Get a small diameter handguard without rails all over it, or just a top rail. Replace the handle with an Ergo grip.

If you can shoot USPSA, you can shoot 3 Gun. Slap a Burris Tac 30 or MTAC on it, get it to a range, zero and learn the controls, borrow a shotgun and sign up. I'm not sure it is even possible to go buy everything and get it right without a few matches under your belt.

Welcome to Boomershooter. This is an exciting time for us, as our contingency program is winding down. Check it out and get ready for 2014!

Hey, I noticed you shoot an xdm! I love mine. I shoot a 9mm 5.25. And what is the contingency program?

Welcome to Boomershooter!!!

Everyone here is very cool and ask a bunch of questions! Someone here has seen it or done it!

The contingency program is where we shoot all the matches we can, then get tons of cool prizes at the end of the year! Check out the contingency threads. As for your ARN here is what I did. It's not the right answer for everyone, but it works for me.

I would tell you to get a good quality optic to start. My 1st AR was a bone stock M&P 15 just like your Bushmaster. With a scope and off a bench I can hit steel on every shot at 300 yards and it's bone stock. And ask half the guys on this board who have shot with me. I am NOT a good shooter like most here.

So you don't have to have a $200 rail to free float your barrel to be able to hit at distance and most of your shooting in 3 gun isn't at long distance anyway, it's up close hoser stuff for the majority of it. I would tell you to get an Aimpoint PRO, zero it, and shoot the heck out of it. Aimpoints are pricey but the PRO isn't too bad and they are awesome sites and awesome to learn with. When you decide you want into 3 gun to stay you'll already know what you want.

Just put an optic on it and shoot it as is. You'll have a blast.
