We live in the country, and were wondering if we need to let neighbors know when we will be shooting on our land. Is there etiquette about this, or is it simply personal preference? Thanks.

It's your property so as long as your behaving responsibly should not be an issue. Having said that there are always people who complain. Do you know your neighbors? Meet them yet? How much land are you on? Where do you plan to shoot on it? How long? What calibers? All these could be factors. Me personally I live in a small "country" neighborhood. Lots range from under 1 acre to 17+, every one is in fair proximity. One neighbor likes to go out and mag dump every now and then. I personally don't but I don't mind if anyone else does. Freedom is nice that way 8-)

When my parents lived in the country I would shoot as much as I wanted whenever I wanted...no issues from the neighbors...once while a buddy and I were bump firing a a pair of mini14s we had one neighbor drive up asking if we had full auto rifles...he brought 2 loaded ar15 mags just incase we would let him shoot it lol...

If you know, and like, your neighbors then you might want to give them a courtesy call. Otherwise just shoot.

If they are Yankee transplants be advised that they WILL call 911 and, if your local dispatcher and/or police are ignorant, lazy, bored or otherwise inclined to harass you without any reasonable suspicion that a crime is occurring, you will have to tell a police officer to go away face to face.

Most people are uncomfortable doing that and will abdicate their own civil rights to take the cop on a guided tour of their guns and land so as not to offend the shiny badge.

Not obligated to inform neighbors. Not obligated to appease tyrants.

Yeah, I'm a proud "yankee" and I can definitely say I shot a lot more growing up in Northern Wisconsin than I see anyone that lives around me. Hell, I've sighted in rifles behind my house in a sub-division, granted it was into the swamp.

Maybe you were referring to yankees from big cities, but don't lump everyone from the North into that category.

You're a formerly Northern, now carpetbagging, redneck. Yankees equate gunfire, let alone ownership, with violent crime.

Just use common sense.

Keep it safe, have a clear lane of fire, and keep the shooting to reasonable hours.
