A friend is hurting for money, and in a bad way. He has a rifle that I am "semi" interested in for the right price, and need to know what kind of reasonable offer to make him. He doesn't know much about it except that it retailed for a little over $1300 when new. I don't know anything about these rifles and their desirability or collectability, so if I didn't like it I could sell it right away......

It is a synthetic stock Browning BAR longtrac in .300 Win Mag. It has a box and half of factory ammo through it and a Bushnell Elite 3200 scope on it.

I see them selling new on Armslist for $900+ with no optic.....

Lousy iPhone pics coming....

If he was a friend you would give him the $1000 and let him keep the rifle.
But then again I dont know what generation your from and what you define "friend" as.

Agreed. But this "friend" isn't that kind of "friend" and I offered to help him out with cash but he emphatically said no. So here I am.

Anything to add? Know anything about the rifle or its collectibility?

Some people don't like to receive charity.

Its a current production Browning, not a collector's item.
For a friend, $900~1000 seems like a good price for the rifle+scope in used but good condition.

I'm just worried that if I pick it up, I won't want to keep it and ill be stuck with it. I only keep guns that I enjoy shooting, and I've never been a fan of semi-auto hunting style rifles.

Anyone know someone looking for something like this? I could pass along a good deal.

I was confused...I thought that all the posting about him being a friend and needing the money ect ect ect was in some vein a show of intent to help him out.
take him to a pawn shop, see what they will give him then you give him $1 more.

Sure I want to help him out but I'm not gonna pay retail price for it. I don't want to pay a normal used price for it and then decide I don't like the rifle. That was the reason for te post, to find out some more info, possible first hand experience with this model, desirability, and the like.

my 2 cents

a BAR is a good gun. i had a friend whose wife gave him a wood stock 30-06 BAR about 15 years ago. they said it cost around $600.

i was at a gun store a few weeks ago and a guy was looking at one just like my friends. it was in great shape and they were asking $600.

sounds like they at least hold their value.

and wal mart has plenty of 300 mag ammo to stock up on. its the only thing not selling.

I have one in 270 and I use to use it when we ran dogs. They are great rifles, expecially if you need a quick follow up shot. Being semi auto brings down the recoil so they shoot pretty soft. I would think $8/900 would be a price where you wouldn't get hurt. But be warned, I had my 270 on a gun show table for $600 and I got to take it home. Lot of tire kickers but no buyers.

Good luck,
Jeff

i just told you.
go to a few pawnshops and see what they will pay him for the rifle, then give him $1 more than the highest offer.
Thats not going to be retail because pawn shops are buying to resale at a profit.
You win because you get it cheap, he wins because he gets $1 more than he could by selling it to a pawn shop.
Its fair for both of you.
The only person its not fair to is the guy looking to fleece the owner and double his money. That certainly isnt you since your his friend, or whatever.

personally...i would own the thing. And I LOVE brownings. That thing is butt ugly, and that scope...gawd awful. what was browning thinking? It looks like an attempt to revive that planet of the apes...battlestar galatica look in a hunting rifle?

I mean...I think its ugly and I like steyrs...

Here is how I value used guns.
Find the best price on the internet new.
Then subtract 25% this gives the value in excellent to new condition.
Adjust according to accessories and condition.
Pawn Shops try to make hold a 300% profit margin.
If they are selling a gun for $300 they paid about $100 for it.

Before you do anything, pop off several rounds and see how your shoulder feels :o
