MVSA Choate Multi-Gun Melee October 10 - 13, 2013

It's a slow day at work so I pulled up some of the climatological data for the Hot Springs area for October.

Avg High Temp 75 Record High Temp 92
Avg Low Temp 53 Record Low Temp 26

On average they get rain 9 days out of the month with an average accumulation of 20.7 inches.
October appears to be the area's wetest month averaging 20.7 inches of precip in October so you might want to pack some rain gear just in case.

So I've never been to a big 3 gun match (or a small one for that matter) anyone got a recommendation for how many rounds to bring?

Guys, our match is only a few weeks out. We still have some spots if your buddies have not yet signed up, better tell them to get with it or they won't get a shirt. I'll need to place the order very soon.

Sunrise is about 7:15 and so let's plan on a shooters meeting at 8 AM and we should be breaking shots by 8:30. I'll be out at the range on Friday afternoon/evening if you want to come out and look around and take care of registration. I probably won't hang around much past 7:30 PM on Friday night.

We will have water and will bring in some world famous Smoking In Style Bar-B-Que for lunch. We should not have any problems shooting the whole match on Saturday. But, officially the match is scheduled to go to Sunday at Noon. So come prepared to shoot it all on Saturday, but if we run long and need to finish on Sunday morning just remember that that is the official match schedule.

Range Officers can begin shooting on Thursday or can shoot the whole match on Friday.

As for squadding, go ahead and pick a squad. But I may have to move some around to make it balance. I will let you know if I do that to you.

You should be able to drive either to each stage, or at least close. There will be a short walk to the far woods stage which is Rifle only.

The prize table has 3 Guns. An AR-15 that I built. It is an AR Stoner 18 in. 223 Wylde barrel and compensator. 4 rail handguard and a polymer lower with a Choate buttstock. Then we have a Mossberg shotgun and an FNH certificate for a shotgun. Bryon has been working hard and has a number of other items on the table as well. Fred Choate has donated $1,000 cash to the purse and I hope to be able to match that from the entry fees. We'll pay cash to the top winners. This won't go very deep to keep the $ good for the top 3. We will draw at random from among all competitors for the prize table items.

I don't see a way to attach a file to this e-mail (I am using the PractiScore system). I will try to do another e-mail with the stages on them. The target count looks like this:
Pistol 61
Rifle 75
Birdshot 59
Slugs 2
On at least one stage the targets are optional on which gun you use. You can decide if you want to shoot the targets once or twice or how many misses you'll have with the rifle.

The longest Rifle shot will probably be around 200 YDs through the woods. I won't know until we get it set up, but I don't think I can get much more than that with how the stages will be arranged.

We talked with The Arlington Hotel about doing a banquet on Saturday night and using it as a match hotel, but decided maybe we'll try that next year. So we don't have a match hotel. There are lots of very nice Hotels/Motels in Hot Springs. The closest Motel to the range is The Knights Inn. You should be able to find it with any of several popular travel websites.

Here is a link to squadding.

We are looking forward to a fun match. Shoot me an e-mail if you have any questions.

Are the different ranges/bays close enough together to walk to/from with a gun cart? The wife decided to invite herself along to Arkansas with the plan of dropping me off at the range an then taking the truck and running around Hot Springs...

I think I maybe in the same boat! I may have to pull the Ranger along if its not raining.

You could walk to all stages last year. Two stages where a good ways down the road though. I am sure you could catch a ride to them with your squad mates.

Checking with the boss. This is getting damn close to my deer slaughter season so I need to get one big match done before winter.

I will be in Hot Springs the weekend before so I will let you know how the "Night Life" is at the dirty leg.

So I'm working a slow swing shift and thought I would check on the weather for the match. Here is what NWS is saying:

Saturday A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 80.
Saturday Night A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 59.
Sunday A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 77.
Sunday Night A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 58.

Looking at the long range forecast model their forecast looks about right, real isolated showers and thunderstorms. Temps look good, wind should be fairly light outside of any showers.

Anyone know if there is any cell reception at the range?

Not going to make this one. I just got back from Hot Springs and I highly recommend "Fat Jack's" for dinner. Friend had the Seafood Crepes and he inhaled it. For breakfast, go to the Pancake Shop.

For the rest of the time I was there..... that stays in Nam.

Any Boomers want to meet up for super Friday night. I'm rolling in about 2. I still don't have a place to stay but don't think it will be hard to find one.
