I have a new neighbor who just moved up Tampa with his wife and kids. He has his concealed carry permit from Florida and was asking me what he needs to do to carry here. I didn't know but thought he would have to take the SC class. Any advice I can pass along? I let him know about our happy family and he will sign up here once he has online access set-up. Nice guy, looks like a good neighborhood, unlike the people they replaced.

As soon as he gets his SC Drivers License his Florida Permit will no longer be valid for concealed carry in SC. He needs to take a South Carolina CWP Course. If you are near Myrtle Beach there are plenty of classes. Contact [email protected] for a schedule. Remind him that he can carry a loaded handgun in any closed console of his vehicle without any permits.

I just moved up from GA, got my SC license and applied for my CWP the same day. I had previously taken the SC class before moving. My GA permit became invalid as soon as I turned in my GA license.

With any luck, we can fix this insanity where one moves to SC, and is without rights for at least 90 days until you take a silly course and SLED sends you a permission slip.

GA permit wasn't valid in SC at any time. There is no reciprocity between SC and GA, they don't recognized each others permits. But glad you're here now. :)

I actually moved up here from Florida myself back in Feb '12.

As was stated earlier, as soon as he gets that SC driver's license, the FL permit loses its validity here. He will be unable to carry in this state for a bit of time until he can get the SC permit.

Also --- make sure to tell him to submit an address change for his Florida permit (can be done online at the FL DoACS website). This will turn his FL permit into a proper FL non-resident permit. Also make sure to tell him to keep that FL permit valid --- it's useful if he ever wants to carry in GA.

GOOD advice there!
