I'm thinking of picking one up for plinking, and teaching a 10 year old girl to shoot. Any advice? Other choice is a 10/22 with a tactical stock.
Thanks!
+1 for the bolt action for kids. It's much safer. With that said, my daughter learned on a Nordic upper with a JP trigger in the lower and a dot. After a session with her shooting, my thumbs are sore from loading magazines. Wish I would have went the bolt way.
She had a really good time with a Colt .22 AR, and has shot my Stag from a bench rest. I was thinking Mossberg mostly for looks and price point, but I know that is foolish. Probably go with the 10/22 and adjustable stock. But, a bolt gun....that is fun too!
If you give them a semi auto they will know they will eventually hit it. If you give them a bolt they will try harder. If you give them a single shot they will beg for the next round.
I would not overlook a tube fed Marlin bolt action with a scope. I have a Ruger 77/17 and it is great looking, the bolt feels great and it's a tack driver. But I have a couple of Marlin bolt action rimfires and I would trust them for lunch any day.
I would guess that there are some members who first got a BB gun with a bent sight and bagged a lot of stuff their Mom's told them not to. Kid's figure out Kentucky windage too.
I've seen quite a few "tactical 22's" and I can't recommend any of them except the S&W M&P 15-22. It's the only one I've seen run through matches on multiple occasions and run well.
S&W M&P 15-22 surprised me, it's a hoot to shoot. At 500$ you could buy 3 or 4 trainers. I did like a GSG 5 before lawsuit tactical, but you are in the 4-500 range again.
