Mosin help

Doubles! (just kidding, the sw does that sometimes).

The problem with scope mounts that use the rear sight is flex. Now, most of my experience with that is on Mausers but the mounting is similar. They just aren't stable enough - the fulcrum is a pin through the mount and sight mount. Tighten all you want but that pin can deform. I've had 3 broken aluminum mounts on my Mauser due to this (broke from recoil when adequately tightened) and only finally fixed the problem with a steel version. Also changed the pin from a 2mm roll pin to a 1/4" solid rod; that helped too. Now Mausers kick more than the long Mosins, but the shorties have some whump to them. I'm not sure a non-steel, skeletonized mount cantilevered over the action will be stable enough. This statement applies to the new mount Gamecock24 posted and the longer RSI mount.

Regarding a knob, have the bolt bending guy just cut the knob off and thread the lever. Brownells sells all sorts of tactical knobs for about $40, and they just thread on - should be able to get the thread pitch from Brownells' site.

That's probably what I will do about the knob. Didn't think of asking the smith to thread it for me.

I did the one on the MVP, just cut the knob off, ground a "round" spot and cut some threads in it. Then I screwed the new knob on.

It's far from perfect, as the threads are not deep enough in the knob, and I didn't measure before hand. I have debated drilling it a little deeper and cutting some threads, but it's not bothering me too terribly bad right now.

The problem with that bolt is way it's bent down. There's nothing wrong with it but it just work with the RSI mount bc it's not a low profile bolt. That's why I went with Max Shepard he provides lots of options from length of handle, angle swiped back, kick out flare and threaded from knobs as well as polish and custom stamping. He will even do a pull ring on the cocking knob but if you're going with a Timney trigger that doesn't matter. I milled down my cocking knob. I think I paid $56 and got it back with in 2 weeks.

That's gorgeous......

Any Mosin specific forums? Would love to find the Timney and the bolt "used" to keep this "budget" rifle truly a budget rifle, lol.

Hope you weren't hiding out from anyone! :D ;)

Man, that is shiny!

I frequent the SOCAMO (Southern California Mosin Owner) forum which is a very Mosin modder friendly site, you'll see some very cool Mosin builds on that site. And there is also SRF Surplus Rifle Forum, it has a Mosin selection as well as various other surplus rifle sections. You may get lucky and find a Timmney on there but it's such a great trigger compared to the crap stock Mosin trigger that I doubt many people are selling them. I got mine from Amazon for $100. If you're want to go cheaper than that I know you can get a Finnish Mosin trigger for $50 on GB which are probably the best original Mosin triggers you can find.

It's mainly a bench rest rifle so I don't have to worry about the paper or steel shooting back. I'm going to try to take a deer with that rifle next season.

I have done a few Mosins into sporters. Use a 91/30 since there is an 11MM dovetail under the rear sight. A mount from BKL technologies will do great. It will mount right to the 11MM dovetail. If I remember correctly the mount is a BKL-253.They are rock solid
The best barrel length is 20 inches. It doesn't have to be an 11 degree crown, just a good clean crown.
I shoot both milsurp ammo and S&B soft points. Not much difference in point of impact. If I can help in any way just PM me.
