Mosin help

I have come across a ProMag stock for a Mosin Nagant from a friend for a helluva deal that I couldn't pass up. Never owned a Mosin, but I guess it's time to put one in this stock.

Any advice on where/how to buy one that is worthy of this aftermarket stock? I don't want to cannibalize a perfectly good rifle for this project, so I'm interested in finding one that has a destroyed/broken stock.

Any ideas where to start?

Thanks

Is this for the 91/30...the real long one or is it for the m-44...???

The last time I went to the gun doctors on 17-A...he had a couple of the 91/30's that were kind of rough...and he had them priced pretty reasonable.

I bought a ugly M-44 off of them about year ago. It had a perfect barrel but the stock was ugly...If I remember right, I gave him $150.00 for it..

Hope this kind of steers you a little..

Steve

The stock fits most variants, here's a link: http://promagindustries.com/mosin-nagan ... iants.html

I don't know much about the variants, would anyone like to suggest one over the other? I'm not opposed to spending $150 for one if I can find one in decent shape, but I planned on duracoating it anyway, so if it's beat up I don't really care too much as long as function is good and bore/barrel/chamber aren't destroyed. This will be a range gun, just for fun.

I think a shorter barrel would "look" better in this stock.....so M44?

The Archangle stock will fit either 91/30 hex or round receivers as well as a M44/T53. I suggest a T53 which is a Chinese version of the M44 Mosin. J&G sales did have T53's for $100 a few months ago. I bought one and it was perfect for a project gun. If your looking to put a scope on it too look at the Rock Solid Ind. mount it requires some drilling and tapping on the receiver but if that's too much for you then the JMeck mount is your next best bet. With either of those mounts you'll need a bent bolt handle also which RSI sells too. There are other scope mounts available but most them work for LER scopes if you want to do a scout rifle. I own several Mosins so I'll try to be as much help as possible.

Thanks for the reply.

Drilling/tapping will not be a problem, I will probably look for that mount.

Should I feel bad if all I can find is a rifle in good shape, and I go tearing it apart? Or should I not care because of the abundance of them? I'm all for history and all, but I'm also all for having fun, and I think this project will be fun and rewarding for me. A cheap shooter, that looks good, and shoots well? Can't ask for more than that.

I wouldn't feel bad about it especially if you're getting a run Of the mill Mosin which would be either of those mentioned already. If want a cleaner looking barrel with out the bayo lug a 91/30 cut to 22" and 11* crown would look very clean. There are literally millions of Mosins out there.

I've got a T53 where the metal is in decent shape (and headspace checks OK) but the chu-wood stock is absolute junk.

I was going to modify a russian 91/30 stock to fit and resell the bugger, but if you want a rifle to build on this is a good choice. Send me a PM and we can talk about it.

That's the plan, but want to get the barrel/action IN the stock before I decide on a length I think.

Any suggestions on the cut/crown? Lots of people online showing easy ways to do at home. I have the tools necessary.

Should I attempt to do myself with a lapping tool and some compound, or pay someone to do it? Any idea what someone would charge to cut/crown?

Thanks again

EDIT: Found this link. INTERESTING to say the least............ http://www.longrangehunting.com/article ... rown-1.php

If you're a DIY type or several rifles you want or need to crown it is possible to do yourself. Manson Percesion make recrowning that can be powered by a drill or power screw driver but the tool is $125. Here's a demo of how it works. http://youtu.be/b23lfzpZrJ4
I only suggest 22" for the barrel because that's what most of users on Surplus Rifle Forum and SOCAMO have decided on being the best for shortening without sacrificing any performance.

Found this article, where the guy cut down to 22" and I think it looks okay proportionally to the stock. Picture is on second part of the post, read the first part if you like....

http://kalipinckney.wordpress.com/mosin ... -part-two/

Reminds me of my frankenstein MVP....but I think I want shorter on the Mosin.

Think I'll drop in a Timney trigger and a bolt and have a fun little toy at 20" or maybe 18". I'm thinking a flat dark grey for the barrel/action and a polished bolt/handle in the black stock will look nice. Optics will be another chore altogether....

I agree about the RSI mount being the best that what's on my Mosin I Built and they have a couple of new options available too. I just want to show some other options.

I like the idea of that one, but I think it looks hideous on the archangel stock, but thanks for the input for sure!

So the rock solid mount comes with bolt body and bolt handle. That means I just swap the bolt head from my known good bolt and I'm good to go right? Well, other than the $172 for mount and bolt body....wow. For that money I think I"ll send my bolt body off for some more custom work other than just a bent handle....

I have secured a rifle, will be picking it up next week when I get back in town.

Thanks again for all the help.

Here's the guy that did my bolt. http://www.maxshepherdboltproducts.com the company I got my stock from also sells bent bolts too http://www.biggorillagunworks.com so that's another option for you. What kind of Mosin did you get.

Picking up a T53 from a forum member.

I like this look.....for this stock....what you think?

Look in his pictures and it shows it on the archangel stock. I messgaed him and he says it will not work with the RSI mount......he recommended the Weaver mount that's in the pics in the eBay ad.

I just don't know. Would love a jeweled bolt, with some sort of aftermarket knob on it. Might just have to do my own knob like I did on the MVP.
