Anybody else hunting shrooms?

I've made three dry runs before today.
Hit the mother load. 102 total, some 7" long. Morel omelets for breakfast in the morning.

I've never had one. What do they taste like?

Morels taste like what you put them with. If you put them in bacon grease, they will taste like bacon with a little whang, or if you use them in eggs, or mixed in mushroom soup, they take on the flavor. Just taking a bite of one is kind of bland, but normal mushrooms bought from the store are kind of the same way.

The main attraction hunting them, is that it gets one into the woods. The mushroom season typically comes on during turkey season, so while in the woods most do a combo search. Finding a deer shed is a bonus.

How do you prepare it? I see it all over the woods, but have never taken the plunge.

I've gotten lazy, I wait till I get reports of people finding them before I get serious.
A walk in the woods in the spring is never a bad thing.
I sometimes get distracted looking at other things.


It's hard to explain what they taste like except I really like them.
I prefer them cut in half and breaded then fried.
A lot of people stuff them but to me that seems to over power their flavor.

I saw one yesterday. Bright back fond memories of hinting for them with my dad when I was a kid.

My buddy has hit pay dirt over the last two days. He lives in town next to a development with a "green area" in the middle of it. I guess the folks that live there don't know what they are.

sounds fun, never went and found them but I do have a yard full of wild onions.

This year is the first year since I was living here as a kid that I have hunted for them.
I got about 4 5 gallon buckets full of them.☺
I sure missed them when I was gone.
