Montefeltro for 3 Gun?

Hello,
My buddy has a HK imported Montefeltro (1998?) that he would like to use for 3 gun but its barrel lug design prohibits installation of a mag extension.
Can he install a later M1 barrel and mag tube or is he screwed?

He knows it would probably be cheaper to sell it and get something new but it was a graduation present from his parents.

I'm not even sure if the parts are interchangable, but he could almost buy a used M1 off of gunbroker for the cost of replacing those.
