Academy has the steel 223 (or 7.62 X 39 for JP) for $4.99/20 rd box. It is the varnish coated steel cases. I have never shot this, but the guy at the counter said feed well. I bought 200 to test it out. Anyone had any experience with it? For a quarter it is pretty economical for the close range stuff.

I will update this after the 200 rounds to report on reliability.

I've shot about 2.5K of it. 2 MOA ammo in my gun, only 1 bum primer out of all that.

It's the same stuff as Brown Bear.

It goes on sale periodically for $3.99/20. That's when I back the truck up. I have had great success with the 1k or so that I have shot.

I have shot lots of it, never had a problem with close targets, I clean often. Its 3.99 often here also on sale.

Is steel ammo ok for a brand new 1&8 Crome lined barrel? Is there a special kind I should shoot thru it first?

Run a few patches and some bore cleaner through your barrel then shoot it. You could read all week about proper break in procedures. I shot a few FMJ's through all of mine them ran a few patches through them then shot some more then a few more patches.

Clean it and shoot the heck out of it and clean it again, recently I tried some of the Silver Bear 62 gr and was surprised how well it shot, it seems light loaded but shot great.

I have shot .223, 7.62x39, 9mm, and 7.62x54R steel Monarch without any problems at all. I don't clean my 9mm very often (Glock, go figure) and don't have problems with the shellac building up.

That silver bear always gives me stuck cases if I run it in a dirty chamber or mix it with brass cased ammo. I suspect that the Pogo sticking the rifle to get the stuck cases out bent my extractor causing all kinds of malts. I stick with the brown coated stuff now if I'm gonna shoot steel.

Every match I have shot was with 5;56 Fed LC and never had a problem, I shoot the steel in the river bottoms while checking fences..
