Anyone have any experience with the Maverick 88's?

I did some horse trading the other day and picked up a new Ruger 10-22 with an extra clip and a used Maverick 88. I've read that it's basically a Mossberg 500 with plastic guts, but when I took it apart to clean it up and check it out the parts all looked metal and reasonable sturdy. I shot it a couple times at some clay birds and like the feel and didn't think it had a lot of recoil. Just kind of wondering if I can expect the thing to fall apart in a few weeks or not. heh

I owned an 88 and a 500 at the same time and took them apart to compare. The only real difference I saw was the location of the safety. I ran my 88 pretty hard doing fast cycles and it performed flawlessly with the 500+ rounds I put through it. I'd take a mossberg 88 over a REM 870 any day.

My home defense shotgun is a Maverick 88 and I have never had any trouble. I have shot slugs, buckshot and various other bird shot with no issues

[background=rgb(240, 244, 247)]Maverick 88 has a cross-bolt safety; 500 has a top tang safety.[/background]

[background=rgb(240, 244, 247)]Early Model 88's had a single slide rail, but was changed to a dual slide rail in the 90's.[/background]

[background=rgb(240, 244, 247)]Not a lot of difference. Most everything except trigger groups are interchangeable.[/background]

Cool, thanks for the info guys. Glad it hear it will be a solid little shotgun. I put a pistol grip on it to keep by the bed, but hung onto the stock so I could swap them out for clay bird shooting.

Burk, what kind of light did you stick on it? I'm wanting to get one to stick on there but not really seeing anything that I'm in love with.

Is is just one of those simple mag tube clamps that you can put a flashlight of your choice in, as long as it is the right diameter. Mine is a Surefire Scorpion and the button is right at my
thumb when I grip the fore end. Simple, yet elegant.........like me

That's a cool gadget. So you can just pop the flashlight out and use it when you need it without the gun. I'll have to check around and see if they have some of those around. Thanks

If it wasn't clamped on there tight, it would fly off when you shot it. Also not cool!

Yeah, I get that ... That just didn't happen in my imagination though. heh

Would be cool if there was a quick release or something on it so you could pop the light off if you needed to.
