MAGAZINES 1911A1.... WHAT IS BEST ???

Them how do you know that the problem is with the magazines and not the springs?

Std spring for 5" 1911s is 16lbs. Most shooters that I shoot with use 17#-18.5# springs. I've been using 18.5# for years and like the feel and recoil of the 18.5#. When I shoot reloads I use a 15# spring. Never had a problem with 7 round mags with any of the springs. I cannot answer your question as to why the 8 rounds mags cause the first few rounds especially the 1st one to nose dive into the mag. But just the fact that it happens I will not use the 8 round mags. I tried the 8 rounders in two standard 1911s and a lightweight Springfield 1911 and a Rock Island. Also in my buddies standard 1911. Has me puzzled. This has been with standard military ball ammo.
I'm curious if any other shooter out there have experienced the same problem with 8 round mags.
I have numerous surplus 7 round mag that look like crap well worn and never had a problem with any of them.

All my 1911s are Colts, they all work with 7 rd Military surplus NIW mags without any issues.
All the New 8 rd mags I have ever bought have had problems. I believe JMB would have ordered an 8 or 9 rd mag if it had worked out in the 1911.

I only use 7 rd mags too. I figure Father JMB knew what he was doing when he designed the 1911. I did try a fancy Mccormick 8rd with the special follower that wouldn't hurt an aluminum frame. It mis fed and jammed my LW Commander. I had trouble with it in another gun too. I retired it. I generally use...Are you ready for this ? Factory, or factory style mags! I do use Metalform 7 rd 45 mags with the round top followers in my lw guns. Not even sure I really need to do that either. Any skirted follower is fine with me too. I really like MecGar mags too. I do not have any trouble with 7 round 45 mags.

Me too.
Almost everyone around me are using WC47D's and I do not know that anyone is having problems with them. I'm going to ask around to make sure, to be clear, but I am not aware of any problems. I spoke to a bunch of people at WC- Bill Wilson, John LaHue Wilson Combat, Jason Townsend (Wilson Combat Support) and three techs back some time ago (2010) and all confirmed that they knew of no reported problems with their 47d magazine and that has been my experience.

Got me. All my 1911s are decades old. Just saying.

Remember the Military CMC mags in the brown wrap for $5.00 at gun shows?
I change the spring to Wolfe & a SS rounded follower by Pachmayr.

I do toss any Colt brand mags as they are Junk even with a spring & follower change.

The old ones I have are the permanent base ones. Someone said you can change the springs on those I haven't had any luck...yet.

Do your mags have witness holes in the sides of them. If so I think you just push the follower down ( I use a wooden ruler to do this) put something thru the holes (I use a small file nail small screwdriver…) shake the follower out, rest the top of the mag against a hard surface release the spring. Remove old spring install new spring make sure you put it in the correct side up. Push spring in using ruler, pin it when you get it far enough to put The follower in. Once follower is in mag release mag spring, and it should be good to go. If I've forgotten anything, or got things messed up please feel free to help me out. Thank you

Thanks, I've heard that before but even with my old mags they work great...so far. I did replace all the springs and followers on my AR mags. Installed the no tip followers.
Now that I think of it. The 8 rd mags do not use no tip followers as do the 7 rounders. I could be wrong. Will not be the first time and will not be the last.
