Usually they replace the Op rod with a machined stainless unit then tune the piston and gas assy to it. Not just anyone can do this and make it work like it should. Rifle should also be bedded. Springfield has two old timers that are really good at milking everything out of an M1A.
NM sights have a hood on the rear and the hood is adjustable for 1/2 moa, front is cut to a better profile. and no dont try adding a hood to the original sight.
And your right, you can watch the bullet hit the target at 1000 y thru a spotting scope if you are spotting
I have seen shooters make groups that no other rifle could duplicate unless it was a bolt action with a range specific scope
