M&P9 or G17?

I sold my XD40, now I need another handgun before the next OKC 3-gun. I know it's between the M&P and G17, and I probably couldn't go wrong with either one. Buying knew locally I can get the M&P for nearly $50 less. I know I like the feel of my M&P40. I know I can get all kinds of work done on either one, but I run a fairly limited budget for my weapons, gear, and ammo. I have shot my brothers modded G17, but I haven't shot an M&P9. If I do anything to either one it would probably be the trigger, then the sights, but I have always liked the Glock sights so that one could wait a while. So I turn to the guys I respect most in this area.

You can try mine - I got the M&P 9 pro stock. I chose it because it fit my hand, trigger was good out of box and sights were the hi-viz

I have a modified G17, and while I feel it's perfect as a Glock now that the sights are aligned, I like the way the M&P fits in the hand better. The M&P seems to me like a much improved Glock that won't last as long, but the vast majority of people aren't going to put >300,000 rounds through one pistol. I think that the M&P would be the best buy for competing, and Cyrwus always recommends them. Hell, I'll probably end up with one in a year or two.

This isn't going to help, but here goes: both are damn fine guns. Both are proven in competition and on the streets. What it is going to boil down to is buy the one that fits your hand the best. Generally that will be the one you will shoot the best. If it is the one that costs a little more, so be it. If it means you have to wait another month to get it, so be it. You'll be better off in the long run with the gun you are happiest with. Don't ever rush into a purchase simply because there is a local match coming up. If you settle, your performance may show. If you wait til you can get the gun you want....you'll be closer to dominating. I liken guns to girls. Don't settle. Wait for the right one. Otherwise, you'll end up taking a loss when you "trade up".

Troy is spot on, but I will add that since you already have & like the M&P platform, it seems like the choice is pretty obvious. I'll also say that I've never owned a Glock & only recently became the owner of an M&P 9 Pro (bought used). I just went thru a pistol class with about 1700rnds over 2 days. I didn't have a single failure. I didn't clean the gun before, after or during the training & I was shooting lead. Of course there were some glocks there & they didn't have have any troubles that I'm aware of & I don't know if they cleaned them or not. All I'm saying is that the M&P gets a thumbs up from me.

Why not buy used and save some money?

Do you know of one for sale locally?

Thanks everyone, I'm pretty sure I am going with the M&P. Money is not a factor in my decision, but on the plus side, the M&P costs less and I know how natural my 40 feels in my hand. I guess I was looking for a good reason to go with one and not the other.

I'm in the same boat trying to make that choice, notice a lot of M&P fans on this forum, kind of refreshing for a change. I'm a fairly new shooter and looking for a range gun for USPSA and steel matches. Really like the feel of the M&P 9 Pro and have been leaning that way but the G17 could be used right away in matches (I could borrow mag pouches, holster and extra mags). Never been a Glock fan but have finally gotten where I can shoot my instructors G17 gen3 fairly well and think the gen 4 would perform even better for me with the new grip design. Although my instructor and several other students are big CZ fans and steadily pushing it, I'm just not ready to spend that much on a tricked out CZ right now. Haven't been able to find either one locally but had one dealer tell me he'd have a Pro9 last week and could get a G17 overnight, I said order both and I'd buy one of them. Well so far neither has come in, not the first time a dealer said he could get whatever I want then not deliver.

M&P9 Pro-
Feels great, haven't actually shot one yet
Gun and mags hard to find

G17 g4-
Feels great, haven't actually shot one yet
also kind of hard to find right now
mags cheap and available
could use it in matches right away (with borrowed extra mags and holster)
cheaper but I'd probably want trigger work done soon

Decisions, decisions...
