Sometimes, my M&P40 won't cycle the round. The round gets hung at the top of the chamber when coming out of the mag.

It's happened at a couple 3 guns and at the first heartland match last spring. I thought that maybe it was the ammo I was shooting but I'm just not sure.

Anybody had this issue?

Is the spring too strong? It sounds like it could be putting an excessive amount of pressure on the round forcing it against the mag lips and making it "pop" upwards as the bolt catches it on the way back forward? But I am no gunsmith Just wondering if it may have been a mag issue. was it at the beginning of the mag by any chance?

Its doing this as youre firing, or when youre racking one in?
Is it a particular mag? its a good idea to mark your mags.
How many rounds does the recoil assembly have on it?
Are they reloads? If so, do they chamber check?
Does the barrel opening and hood have any crudded up carbon?
Does the breechface or extractor have any crud, nicks or gouges the case rim can be hanging up on?

Youre now a detective; its up to your powers of deduction to figure it out!

I'll answer as many of the questions as I can.

Its doing this as youre firing, or when youre racking one in? As I am firing, I've tried to rack it slow and fast but it wont do it.
Is it a particular mag? its a good idea to mark your mags. I've marked my mags since. It didn't do it with 3, 5, or 9 at the Heartland match the other night. That only leaves 6 more possibilities
How many rounds does the recoil assembly have on it? I think more than 1,000 but probably less than 2,000, Maybe more than 1,500
Are they reloads? If so, do they chamber check? Not reloads. I shoot federals, S&B's, blazer, blazer brass, winchester, and one more but I can't remember. I wanna say it did it with federals or the s&b's. I shot blazer and blazer brass at Heartland the other night and didn't have a problem.
Does the barrel opening and hood have any crudded up carbon? I clean my pistol before each match so I don't think its crudded up
Does the breechface or extractor have any crud, nicks or gouges the case rim can be hanging up on? No.

The more I think about it, it may be the S&B's bullet. Would a more pointy bullet be more prone to do this? I don't have any more of the S&B's but it seems like they were more pointed than any of the other ones. I'm an idiot when I load mags and just load from whatever box I have, then grab another usually different box when it runs out. I've mostly have all blazer and blazer brass now. And some federal.

Here's a shy-T video of it doing it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icr6qA63_JU

It did it on a couple different stages.

It also did it a few times at the Heatland match in April. I know I had some S&B then.

Its a live round that hangs. It comes out of the mag and hits the top of the chamber as its going in the barrel and gets lodged there. I can rack the slide ant it ejects it and puts another in. Easy fix but if its my pistol's fault, I wanna get it fixed. This is also my CCW pistol.

It does it at the beginning of the vid and again a few times starting at 3:30.

OH...... and my slide isn't locking back! BUT I am 90% sure that its because the way my grip is, I have my thumb touching the slide release.

At the end of my Heartland video from Sunday i shoot the entire mag then reload and the slide isn't locked back. From my hat cam view, I'm pretty sure its because of my grip

Lets get you a new recoil assembly. Let me know when youre in the area or coming to a match.
I guess it could be the bullet.

If youre happy with your grip then chop that slide stop down if youre not getting any slide lock.

I dont think there's anything wrong with my grip.

Is there?? Now you've got me self conscious about it.

What do you mean by chop the slide?

I had the same problem - I had an oversized slide release - my thumbs pretty much rested on the slide release - you might not realize it but if your thumbs are resting on there then its just not engaging - I had this awesome gunsmith I know change it out for a non oversized one.

Mike you are da man....

Then again - I try to never go to slide lock so that isnt an issue :-)

Oh ok. I didn't see slide stop. I just read slide.

I had thought of that before but taking a dremel to my one and only pistol is a little sketchy for me.

Ok. I've taken my m&p completely apart before, I was going to duracoat the frame FDE but changed my mind.

I'll take it apart and see what I can come up with. I'd rather grind the slide release off then fix my grip. I really want it to lock back. Its kinda a PIA when I go to squeeze the trigger and it goes click instead of bang. Throws everything off.

Thanks mike!

Dude...I do the exact same thing with my grip on the M&P. I rarely shoot to lock in production, but I'll still probably hack it off, though.

I have an extra recoil spring you can borrow.

It's been working since I posted this. I've been keeping it extra clean and shooting blazer brass. I figure both of those factors combined are working.

Also i guess I've subconsciously fixed my thumb being on the slide release. It hasn't happened in the last few times I've had it out shooting.
