After speaking with some shooters online and at comps, many have expressed interest in a long range competition in the Arkansas/Oklahoma area. So I am trying to see the number of people that would be interested and what events you would like to see/not see in the course of fire.

As a military sniper I have had a chance to shoot in a few comps geared toward Snipers. From that I have learned that I do not enjoy laying down prone and taking a nap between shots as the paper is pulled and scored. I also have learned that I do not like getting smoked on a 10mile ruck march that is worth 3% of the total weeks score.
That being said I also learned that the ring of steel, and watching your bullet strike at 1000 yards is amazing, and I LOVE shooting events that are “outside the norm”

Some of my favorite matches are,
Unknown distance, moving targets, stress fire, rapid target engagement, target ID/engagement, alternate positions, and buddy support alts.

Who is interested, and what would you like to see in a competition?
lets make this happen in 2012!

I don't have the skills you do, not having anything longer than 200 yds to practice, but have always enjoyed any type of shooting. Took a few deer at 400+ by knowing my gun, and calculating the drop.
After active duty in the Army, I joined the reserves, and had an opportunity to go to camp Perry National Matches for summer camp. Got to watch the 1000yd shooters do their thing. Like you said, it looked kind of boring, but was still impressed with their skills doping the wind, checking humidity, altitude, temperature and loading one round on the spot for the next shot. I dont have that kind of patience.
Run and gun is my favorite, sounds like you get to do a lot of that. :D

I've shot a couple of CMP matches and they were so horrifically boring that I was actually yawning while shooting.

Having said that, I'd love to learn more about shooting rifles...especially stuff that would help in multi-gun.

I dont have a rifle suitable for 1000yd stuff!

You might have one in your safe and not know it.
The 30-06 had won more 1K matches than any other gun in history according to my Sierra reloading manual. The manual is an 80's issue, so another round may have taken the lead by now.
The 06 has also killed every animal on the planet. A very effective hunting round. I'd hate to face a charging buff or elephant with one though.

Location isn't set, this is the ground-floor of the planning. Though, We have a great location around Huntsville Ar. About 20min east of Fayetteville.

I haven't seen anything like this, even on the civilian side most matches are geared towards the "sniper operations" not target acquisition and engagement. I'd like to see a match "for shooters, by shooters" that doesn't envolve field craft, stalks, land nav, or rucks. Just shooting and spotting.

If the match is setup as a shooter/spotter event, your 3-gun rig would work great as a spotter weapon.
A "carbine only" course is in the planning stages @ DR long range

The one thing about Long Range is you may have a suitable rifleand not even know it. Depending on distance/size of target of course. We have tested the stock M-4 with 62 grain green tip out to 800 yds. 100-700 yds is real, starts to fall apart just before 800, although had hits. With heavier loads even better. Let's push what platform we have to the max and find out the limitations. Before you spend a Ton of money. Take care guys ! Merry Christmas !

New here to the forum. I shoot long range tactical matches and would not mind seeing some more in our area. My favorite matches to shoot ar two man competitions. One guy with a bolt gun and one with a gas gun. If your serious about getting one setup let me know I could help with the planning.

What ranges are you talking about? It will be another year, but we are looking at getting a 300 yd range in at Ponca. I'm sure thats just a chip shot for what your shooting.

3 mils right puts on long range matches. There is also a place near Woodward that holds matches every few months. There is a group called Oklahoma Practical Precision Shooters that i have been looking at joining. I believe they do monthly matches but have limited their membership to 70 and are about full. I would like to see more matches around are area.

Glad to have any input you'd like to share.
I know what LR matches I like, but would like to have a "meeting of the minds" to make it a comp that is as enjoyable as possible for all shooters!

You can do a lot to make it fun. I don't like laying on a firing line shooting at the same target. All stages timed but no time limit. Alternating shots between partners where the next person can't shoot until is partner has hit the target. Each target further than the last.

Shooting from a barricade. Shooter running the bolt gun has to shoot and cycle the bolt with their weak arm. You can't touch the rifle with your dominant arm or you are penalized. Makes for a good challenge.

I have shot matches where we have had to engage targets from a boat. That was fun and not something most people would expect or have ever practiced.
