Good Morning Folks,

The frame and slide came in yesterday for the Lone Survivor Foundation 1911 raffle pistol. Upon completion the pistol will be displayed at H&H shooting sports complex, I believe they are going to sell raffle tickets there as well, but I am not 100% on that just yet.

This post will be a running build log of weapon, so I hope you enjoy and good luck in the raffle. Plese take a moment to go out to Lone Survivor's website and get involved with the cause.

Thanks

Anthony Durning

Picture will be posted to night around 8:00 p.m.

Thanks for that Poop! :)

Here we go Picture time,

These pictures show the frame feed ramp being re-milled to correct angle, width and depth to feed hollow point and semi wad cutter ammo.

The first pic is the frame in mill being set up, the second is the mill re-cutting the feed ramp and third is the re-milled feed ramp, finished to a mirror surface.

The gun is currently coated in Cera-Kotes brand new Painters tape blue...LOL :)

Looking good Anthony. I am looking forward to watching it's progression. I hope you guys sell a million raffle tickets. I'm planning to buy one or two. Who knows, I might get lucky!

Beaver Tail grips safety fitting, Chip McMormick grip safety.

These pictures show the frame tangs being prepped to fit a high grip beaver tail (as we smiffs call it) grip safety. The installed safety before contour and at about half way done.

There is still some blending and lots of trips back and forth to the bead blaster.

Notice the safety has no large gaps and is almost flush fit to the tangs, but it still functions prefect. I have to give credit to Bob Rodgers of Rodgers pistol smiting in leading guidance on the correct way to fit a beaver tail, while mine is not as perfect as his, I will keep working at it.

Sorry for the messy work bench in the background haha, cleanliness is next to godlessness, so I guess I am a sinner.

These pictures show the frame feed ramp being re-milled to correct angle, width and depth to feed hollow point and semi wad cutter ammo.

Is there a downside to changing the feed ramp from the original spec? Is this significantly more reliable than just using mags with wadcutter or hybrid feedlips?

These next pictures show the Caspian race ready frame, with their Tactical magwell upgrade.

You can see in the first couple how it came from Caspian and the last few pictures are of some hand blending and re-contouring.

It's about 1/4 of the way done, and I am to tired to keep burning the midnight oil.

some are a little blurry, sorry about that been a long day.

thanks for looking, more to come shortly.

Poop,

the issue is that most feed ramps are not correct from the factory, this one was 50 degrees way way to steep. The factory print feed ramp depth is for ball ammo only, conventional hollow point and semi wad cutter ammo requires a much deeper ramp to feed properly, as well as more width.

Side note, the increased depth, width and proper angle also reduce mechanical friction in the cycle of operations allowing for the gun to run smoother and use the ammo's energy more efficiently.

I know that an in-spec feed ramp with original, GI-style magazines is a total trainwreck with anything other than ball. I was just under the impression that modern magazines were designed so that they would feed properly with HPs and/or SWCs provided that the feed ramp was in spec.

I'm not trying to argue with you, just trying to understand. 1911 'smithing is Deep Magic to me.

Poop,

Good old Chip McCormick mags have been the remedy to some FTF issues, the use of convected follower and proper mag release timing, with good springs is a must in any frame.

The convected design allows the bullet to be centered in the mag vs. the flat. The round is round:) so a round follower makes since, it also allows for more spring pressure on the round its self, and change the rounds feeding angle, That's all dependent on good spring pressure.

and yes it is more reliable, to answer your question from above, sorry sleepy.

I hope I don't come off as argumentative; if I did My apologies.

This sounds like its going to be a sweet gun tony! I cant wait to get me some of those raffle tickets.

You know if you win Bo, you would have a real gun for a change. :)

Just kidding, Was busting my Brothers chops about his glock the other day, So I guess that's way I have a remington R1 sitting on my bench now. LOL

Lol ya i do need a 1911(real gun) asap lol. Hopefully in a month or so ill have the $ or will have won this sweet pistol. fingers crossed.

We are working on that, and trying to devise a way for out of state participants as well.

The pistol will be on Lone Survivor's Facebook as well, but I don't know if they are doing anything with ticket sales.

Goodnight all,

I can't wait to make a donation to the foundation for a chance to win this sweet pistol.(raffles are illegal in oklahoma though I do believe one can offer tickets to win stuff for qualifying donations as long as no one is profiting)
