Limited advice

Ok so I screwed up and started playing in 3-gun and USPSA and am having an awesome time damn-it! but now it's time to think about a pistol cause well the G23 is going to get old and a little more sight radius wouldn't hurt either but don't get me wrong I love my little G23 just need a dedicated limited pistol. Now I don't have the luxury of getting to roll around naked in piles of $100 bills so while I would love to have a double stack 1911 I just have to realize that ain't gonna happen for awhile!

What I am thinking is that if I can find a G35 or G24 it would be a good place to start, I like to build and have done several rifles and have a couple of folks in my back pocket that can offer advice or point me in the right direction granted they are saying 1911 but I have to remind them of my budget and they agree with the Glock. I know Mike has a pretty good understanding and can wave his magic wand and make a Glock awesome along with some others but here are my thoughts and please tell me I'm an idiot if you think so.

Find a G35 or G24 and start shooting it while picking up little goodies to make it better as cash comes avaliable and maybe by next year I'll have me a reliable awesome pistol. I just need to do some reasearch and figure out the good stuff to purchase but a barrel would be a big step so I can shoot lead and lower my reloading cost and from what I hear KKM is the way to go.

If you were going to build a Glock that would be competive what route would you go? would you opt for a G35 or G24? seems I have seen a mess of 6" guns. I appreciate the opinions and suggestions fella's! Later,

go with the 35 for sure.. and then i would talk to mike about barrels etc...

Get a G35 they are a lot easier to find than a G24. Then do this stuff to it. You don't need it all right away. First purchase would be a mag extension or two then sights.

Jesse pretty much what I had on my list of goodies

thinking about a barrel I can run lead bullets to knock down on ammo costs a touch.
On the magwell did you go heavy or standard weight? and is that the beavertail that Mike does? I saw Kurts G24 and thought that to be a hell of a dang good idea as my hand is still healing from the match last Saturday.

Would a G24 be a better choice if one could be found? sorry for the questions. Later,

a g35 will never be more reliabile than the day you buy it; providing its stock. get the gun, some sights, basepads, and youre there.
You want a blinged out g35 that will run with the sti2011's, then either practice your ass off, take classes, and/or buy a 2011.

It would be awesome to have a Glock to keep up with a 2011, Mike I was looking to shoot lead bullets to drop my loading cost and I've heard folks shooting lead from the Glocks but with my super luck the damn thing would blow up! reason I was looking at an aftermarket barrel.

What are everyone's thoughts on the M&P pistols? how does thier reliablity stand up to a Glock?

I need to practice my ass off! Mitch took a video of me shooting one stage and dude I saw all sorts of "F" up's, and I thought I was doing ok :-( this year I'd just like to get all the goodies I need and get back into the sport and if all goes well give it a real go next year. Later,

There's always a used G35 for sale somewhere. I just sold mine recently.
There usually at least one on Enos...in fact there's a deal on one there now.

Oh I've found many G35's out there even a few G24's just a small problem with the bank account not being real happy, I've been building up goodies the last several months just trying my best not to blow all my fun money as my budget is not great right now dang-it. I'm in no big hurry I still have the stubby G23 I can shoot. I have this problem of looking at the STI website though LOL Later,

a M&P40 5" is a pretty cool animal. Theres a few of them out there that I think we can get in your hands and shoot to see how you like em.

I got basepads for my Glock last month, mainly due to the ease of removal. Shooting at OKCGC means dust and dirt, and my Glock stock basepads were nearly impossible to remove in case I needed to clean or service a magazine. I got the Dawson's. At $116 for 4 of them, I feel that they are a terrible expense, but the added capacity creates more value (one reload per stage IS kind of neat). Being able to service my mags without tools at any moment, though, is great peace of mind.

I think there are several local shooters using lead in factory Glock barrels. I don't own a Glock so I can't tell you 100% one way or the other. I do however own an M&P Pro. I shoot lead through it with no problems at all. M&P's are fantastic guns for shooting USPSA & 3Gun.

The only reason to buy the G35 over the M&P is the fact that you can buy Glock mags and parts cheaper because they are more of them out there. If I started from scratch right now I would probably go with the M&P because it looks better.

I think there's an m&p40 for sale in the classifieds with a lot of work done and five mags and a couple holsters. Let me check if it's still for sale... Yep it is.

I was looking and reading about them just actually finding a 5" 40SW to put hands on seems like I would have a better chance of finding a unicorn so if you will be at the next 3-gun I'd really like to try one, if not at the match let me know and I can meet up with you someplace. The nice thing about the M&P is the normal barrel over the cost of buying one for the G35 to shoot lead.

When I moved to Limited I went "cheap" and took the G35 route. Yes it's a good rig, and it's better than I am currently. However, at some point it will be holding me back and I will have to upgrade to a 2011. Therefore, I will have to work on learning a new platform. If I had it to do over I'd go back and get a good 6" 2011, and then not have to worry about learning a new gun.

The gun really is the cheapest part of this game. The match fees, gas money, hotels and ammo cost far outpace the initial cost of the pistol. So dropping a few grand on a nice 2011 is worth it in the long run. Plus if you decide it isn't for you it will be easy enough to get most of your money back.

Yep that's my problem is dropping a couple grand at once! I have lots of other things in my life that like my money as well that's why when I got to shooting LR rifles I learned to build them, my AR I built as I could just get parts here and there and when I had everything in one pile I could put the goodies together. I guess if it came down to it I could just gather the goodies to build one of the STI's, I might look into doing that I know a couple of guys that would be happy to hear me go with a 1911 over a Glock for sure LOL.

I hear ya on the other stuff costing! I just bought a house the first of the year and those little plastic cards I have got melted pretty good, so I have to get them back in order before next year so I can get out and play at some of the other matches. This year has been a learning and getting items together sort of task so I have to tell everyone that has stepped up a big thank you! Later,

kirk you going to be at the next 3gun match?? if so you could probably borrow my gun for a stage and jesses gun for a stage.. that way you could try both the m and p and the glock...
