Didn't know where to post this but. Anyway... The father-n-law gave me a new flash light this weekend. I have been using a streamlight polytec for the last two years and has been a solid light. The new addition a china made ultra fire T6. Dang this thing is bright! Bought it for me after I was doting all over his heider. Seems to be a great knock off. If anyone is in the market for a new light look into both. Disappointed in the polytech due to poor battery life, cr123 is expensive :|

I used to be a big advocate of the Surefire G series (plastic housing) as affordable and damn-thats-bright, but they had poor battery life too. I think 2 hours runtime total.

I got a Surefire G2 LED last year for Christmas and use it all the time - still haven't replaced the batteries (still CR123s). Before I'd get a few months out of my G2 or G3 lights.

Still, Surefire G2 LED was about $70, so it ain't the cheapest option out there.

I've been eyeballing the UltraFire's on eBay, especially the red one for use on a carbine. (Apparently, red causes less night blindness after use than white or green. Experienced users, please chime in.)

As for EDC, I like the Maglight XL 50: intuitive bright/dim/strobe, single focus, 3xAAA long life, bright, long throw, no pocket snaggers, mountable (kinda) with a 1"
ring. $25 about everywhere.

I have also a Firefield: bright, rugged, long throw, mountable with 1" ring, but uses those hi-dolla CR123 batteries. $25 at Sportsmans Guide.

except for long ago when big mag lights were it ive always had cheap aa,aaa lights.

i wanted a better one, looked around and found a streamlight protac 2l. its 200 lumens on hi, has strobe and low. 2 hr high and 6 or 7 on low. $34.

cr 123 bats. i was told not to get the 123S from just the regular shelf. they are ment for cameras. i found them for $2 each and they work fine but after 2 hrs high just stops cold. low still works. i saw some at academy i believe were $1 each in a ten pack but the next time i looked i couldnt find them.

Going to my deer stand I use a bight white led, when i get to my stand I switch to a red led on my head lamp. This works great getting my pupils to readjust quickly and regain my natural "night vision". A couple weeks ago i forgot my head lamp and the bright white led wrecked my vision took me 4 x as long to adjust to the environment. That is a mistake I will not make again...
