Well-Known Fanatic
Hello all,
I recently decided to do an AR build around the 5.56/.223 round. I have a Mini 14 that shoots 5.56/.223 so I thought the AR would be fitting in the same caliber. I bought a Surplus Ammo & Arms stripped lower and a Palmetto State Armory LPK. I had to wait on some roll pin punches to come in the mail, but finally got everything in the lower and working well.
I painted the pictograms for Fire/Safe with Testors Flat Model Paint (Red and White, respectively). I hadn't planned on doing any of the lettering, but some white paint ran into the rollmarks above the pictograms and I couldn't get it out so I went ahead and filled it with white as well. I don't think it looks terribly obnoxious so I'll leave it. If I hate it later, I'll try a little harder to remove it. But I'm good with it for now.
I'm not terribly happy with the PSA stock or grip. The stock doesn't fit as tight as I'd like and the grip isn't the most comfortable, but I'm planning on using Magpul furniture up front when I get the upper so I'll probably get a Magpul stock and Hogue grip all at the same time. I have Hogue stuff on my other guns so I'm familiar with the comfort level of their products.
Otherwise, I'm pleased. Everything went together smoothy and all of the components had good fit and finish. Can't wait to get an upper and a BCG for it so I can get it out and shoot it. Might be a while, though as money's a little tight here at the end of the year... Christmas is coming up though.
Just FYI, I'm thinking of a PSA 16" Upper. Not sure which BCG I'll go with, but I definitely like the idea of their uppers and I've read good things about them. For the money, I think they're ideal.
Here are a few photos of the build so far:
