With the 2012 Summer Games fast approaching and coming off of the United States amazing show in the World Shoot in Greece I was wonder what everyone thought of the chances of IPSC ever being given a chance to be an exhibition event in the Olympics if not an all out event period.

What an idea! We need to start a petition. If synchronized swimming and curling and bobsledding can garner instances of worldwide recognition, being a badass shooter should too. They already recognize other shooting sports, so it should be a natural progression.

Never gonna happen. Wayyyyyy too politically incorrect. Which is pretty ironic because most of the games have direct historical links to combat.

No chance.
The Olympics have been trying for years to eliminate all the shooting sports.
The only reason they have not been successful is that there are soooo many medals given in all the various different disciplines.
They have tried to change the rifle and pistol event into airgun only. They are still trying to change biathlon into an airgun event.
They have changed pentathlon shooting into a lazer tag event.

(Pentathlon switched to airguns, and then proposed a move to lazer tag guns, but that was narrowly vetoed for the London games.)

Airsoft has a better chance of getting into the Olympics.

Interesting that Pentathlon wanted to move away from real guns because as Prince Albert said:
"They [the laser guns] will be easier to carry around and to take on aeroplanes. It's the way of the future."

But, they still have to take a HORSE and a SWORD. Geez.

Holy crap, I had not heard that they are going to be using laser guns in the Pentathlon. Way to eliminate actual shooting skill from the competition. Yeah precision will still be important but things like trigger control will virtually eliminted especially with the extreme sensitivity of competion trigger (no first had knowledge on that but I have heard trigger pull is around a few ounces). What is next? Are javelin competitors going to be required to put tennis ball on the end of javelin to blunt the sharp pointy end?

As for airsoft, I would gladly watch an Airsoft stage be shot than golf or rythmic gymnastics.

BLASPHEMY!!!!!! This and beach volleyball are the reasons we watch the summer olympics.

Oh I agree with beach volleyball whole heartedly but if I want to see someone prance around with a long ribbon I will give one to my girlfriends 2 year old baby sister.

And remember that the USPSA has about 20,000 members, IPSC has about the same.
So 40k participants wont get the Olympic's attention.

Golf had a hard time getting into the Olympics. The USGA has over 700,000 members.

How many people shoot the other olympic sports? I bet the majority of them make it to the Olympics.

Hmm. The shotgun sports are HUGE compared to USPSA/IPSC. ATA has 70K+ members and they are only one of the trap organizations. Trap shooting is a growing and thriving high school sport. The Grand American (trap nationals) had over 11,000 combined entries last year. (USPSA Nationals had like 600?)
Those other rifle and pistol precision events are old school holdovers that I know very little about except that they are still popular.
The airgun competitions are rapidly growing (they're huge in Europe and growing)
BTW, Umarex recently hired legendary precision shooter Janet Raab to shore up their airgun competition division.

Heck, for that matter, SASS has 75,000+ members. WTF?

My point is, dont hold your breath, IPSC wont be in the Olympics anytime soon.

On a positive note, shooting is one of the few activities used in both the summer and winter games.

The IOC is notoriously anti gun. This topic has been discussed for over 20 yrs. and it's never going to happen. Makes you wonder what would happen, if some one showed up at the olympics with a Kimber Gold Match in 45 ACP
Jess

Screw the olympics. Let's just hold a giant gun orriented compitition. Like the olympics but gun oriented. Uspsa/ipsc, idpa, bullseye, clay sports, archery and everything else between... we'll call it iggies better than the olympics challenge!

OC/IOC whatever, their sexuality would be in question if they had one.
Here is something folks can watch and enjoy that folks would watch. One can see IPSC and even IDPA to a lesser degree are international sports.
You look back as stated about the history of the games and it would be natural (3 gun any way ;) ) and the powers to be yrs ago allowed shooting. Who are this jackboots think they are the world freaking police? I say more than not yes, since we there have been talks for yrs to get our gun laws in line with the freaking world order.
Corncob and turpentine I say.

How many entrants where in the last world shoot? I am not sure on that number but I am willing to be any one countries delegation came close to a single discpline delegation in the olympics (ie equivilent to trap, skeet, double trap). When you look at the history of the olympics large bore shooting was allowed and with events like military rifle 3-position, 1000 yard, military pistol they sounded like a continuation of the Camp Perry National Matches held every year. But do sadly agree that our sport will probably never make it to the Olympics which just means that we need to get some network to film and televise the world shoot. Maybe NBC Sports, they already air 3-gun nation now!

I had no idea there where that many competitors there. I figured the total number would be somewhere closer to the 600ish that Nationals usually draws in.
