Yeah I thought about the laws. If I did the work for someone they would have to hang out with me in my garage while I did the work. I can't take posession of the gun to do work and not have the owner there with me unless I have my FFL.

You can keep your buddies gun in your safe... he just cannot pay you for any work you do on it while your storing it. Gunsmiths are "registered" with the BATFE...
