I had been planning to build my own AR with our tax return this year and was very disappointed with the recent turn of events. I've been watching, like y'all have been, I'm sure, as the prices climbed, climbed, reached ridiculous, and kept on going. I'd pretty much given up building one this year, or ever if the stupidity Feinstein is going to present to congress goes anywhere.

Anyway, through chatting up the clerk at Wally's while Christmas shopping I found out he had a list of people asking to be called when the weapons they're looking for come in. I put my name in for a DMPS sportical, and yesterday I got called that they got one in, was I still interested? I think I was there before he finished hanging up LOL. I was hoping that they wouldn't raise the price too much but I needn't have worried, they had it well below the manufacturers price.

So far I like it. It doesn't have some of the things I wanted, like a forward assist, so I hope to eventually replace the upper but as it sits I'm happy with it. Out of curiosity I took a peek at gunbroker and they have the exact same model, also new in box, that's been bid up to $1100 and still has two days to go. I was almost tempted, but I think I'm ahead now and I'd rather not push my luck. Besides, I'm having a lot of fun taking it apart and putting it back together.

Congratulations Enjay. Patience is always rewarded. Of course, some times we just get lucky. Enjoy learning about your new weapon. 8-)

Yup, it's the slick sided model. No forward assist, no ejection port cover to get in the way of the dirt wanting to invade.

Congrads girl. Very happy for you. I had one of those. They shot well...and, who needs a foward assist?????I have never used one on any rifle I have had....And, I don't think you are going to take your rifle out in the desert nor anywhere it is going to be that dirty...till you clean it...

Shoot the heck out of it...then, after this foolishness with ammo and guns being leveled out...you can change out the upper...

Enjoy it...

Conversely, I've used the FA on every rifle I've had. After firing several hundred rounds, the bolt can get cruddy and the forward assist can help get get the bolt into battery. There are other reasons, but they have a function and a place on a rifle.

Just because this model doesn't have one, Enjay, doesn't mean you won't get good use out of the rifle.

Is it a flat top or does it have a removeable carry handle? I'd look for a decent red dot optic (when they come back in stock) Primary Arms will have their micro red dots in stock again...you just have to check back. I got one in the last batch.

Congrats -- in today's market any AR at a fair price is a good deal!

I think you may later choose to upgrade but the DPMS should be a good starter rifle, and ARs are super easy to upgrade. I would avoid paying >$1000 for a second one though...

Next step -- training! :)

11B, Fordnut, I do like the forward assist on my husbands rifle and we have had occasion to use it once with some cruddy .223. It wasn't necessary, it just made things a little easier. I do have a little red dot that my husband was borrowing for his PS90. The DPMS did not come with any sights or handles, so yes it is a flat top :) You're right, I probably don't need an ejection port cover but I've scrubbed so much gunk out of guns over the years that anything that keeps them cleaner is a bonus.

Arma, I'm still tempted to sell it, the ending bids seem to be running around $1300 on gunbroker. The profit would be nice but at the same time I want an AR, I like this one, and I don't want to push my luck in finding another one right now. On a side note, I like the letters you've been blogging lately. :)

The gun market is starting to self-correct now that people are paying attention to the reality that there won't be a new national Assault Weapons Ban.

Enjay, if you were someone that I personally knew I would strongly recommend that you put your AR on Armslist and sell it for $1500 cash and then buy the gun you really want. Sure, you will have to backorder it but it will be worth the wait.

I haven't noticed the market starting to self correct......The show is far from over and things will change in the way that firearms are handled by the federal and state governments........Optimism is great, but you are not taking into consideration that the government and most politicians are crazy.

It's in the early stages of auto-correcting and the prices coming down. This is evident when viewing things on a national scale through various forums and whatnot.

If you're using local gunshops, Gunbroker or Armslist as your market research then of course things still look retarded. That's why I said sell that "less-than-desired" Sportical on Armslist right now on Armslist for $1500 and backorder the gun she really wants.

wait and find a 5.56 upper then get a 22 conversion for the upper without forward assist, 22 wont need it. thats what i got for my 22 upper. actually i bought the stripped upper and built it and used a ceiner kit and 5.56 bbl. then i bought a dedicated 22 upper from PSA. next i switched uppers and had an extra 5.56 with assist and the 22 dedicated with sportical upper.
