Hunting partner needed

I've always wanted to hunt. Went deer hunting twice years ago but didn't have a clue what I was doing and didn't get one. I've taken a few squirrels, but that's the extent of my hunting experience. I need somebody to show me the ropes, both in how to hunt and how to process the game. Deer, hog, squirrel, rabbit, migratory birds, turkey, quail and pheasant are all game I'd like to hunt. I've looked at guided hunts but they're ridiculously expensive. I was hoping somebody might be willing to let me tag along and learn. If anybody would be willing to pass on some of their knowledge or knows of programs for new hunters, let me know.

I'm a lifelong hunter and would be happy to help and pass on some knowledge. However, I don't have a place locally to go. If you have a place or legal access to a place that's fairly local, let me know and I'll try to help. PM me if you'de like to discuss.

If anybody has access to land around central Oklahoma, I'll definitely take someone coyote hunting. All you'll need is a rifle that you can hit 150 yards and closer. September to march is when I call the most.
 
Lovin' the coyote hunting as well. Its really tough in my area as its so flat that you can see the horizion. Every coyote in miles can see your vehicle, and you walking in.
The greyhound guys really love this area for that same reason.
I do manage to kill a few from the deer stand every year.

Got room for a 3rd? lol. Not new to it, but my problem is access to areas to hunt, and a ride! We only have one car so I am always tagging along with someone and my hunting buddy joined the Army. We went last year on his leave but this year he will be in Afghanistan.

What public land do you hunt? I have done some out at Skiatook, and out near Choteau.
 
All are welcome. Have about five different places but some are only by boat. I am in the woods 3-4 days a week let me know?

If you get some access to land I would love to shoot some coyotes, I am basically a newb when it comes to hunting thow so I may need a 101 class, also id have to borrow my grandfathers .30-30 would that do?
 
A 30.30 would do well. Basically I like anything bigger than a .204. A lot of guys use .204's and I'm not knocking them. I've just seen a few dogs run off from some good shots and I believe a larger caliber would have put them down. If you can hit a paper plate at 150 yards every time, you're fine.

Anyways I'm ready and willing to take anybody if you can get the place. I have places but its strictly for me and my brother. That might sound selfish.. And it is. Lol. He doesn't take people on our places so neither do I.

I'd be willing to take somebody within 30-45 minutes of Norman. Saturday evenings and all day Sundays are best for me. I've got the call and I'll bring my rifle and shotgun just in case. But you'll get to do the shooting. I'll just be there shooting clean up. I'll take pictures and video if I can and let you keep the coyotes. I won't skin the coyotes for you. I can't guarantee we will kill a coyote, but we won't go home without shooting something.
 
The whole problem with trying to find somebody to take you hunting is that they are rarely going to take you to their private places. It takes too long to nurture the landowners that are giving them permission.
One indescretion will result in them losing permission to hunt there. Trust me on this, I've been there and done that.

Hunting public land is almost the same. People have spent the time to find places where others haven't taken the time to scout, or its too far to walk for some.

Its kind of sad, because I've always felt that experienced hunters should mentor those that are starting into the hobby. We do, and most of the time its our family that we have the time for.
Prices of fuel these days prevent a lot of experience folks from travelling a lot.
I love the controlled hunts, as it gets me out of the comfort zone and make me use the skills acquired over the years to scout new areas.

For those that don't have friends/family land to hunt on, Sign up for the controlled hunts that Oklahoma offers, and keep accepting offers from those that will take you to public land. Its crowded at times, but the crowds can keep the deer/game moving. Huge deer are killed every year from public grounds.

If its before season, I'll be happy to take somebody out on Kaw WMA if time permits to do some scouting. Be fore-warned, I don't take the easy routes.

This is the kind of help I could really use. I scented down and sat in the woods a couple times this gun season and didnt see jack (heard some gun shots though). I had the nagging feeling that I just wasn't in a good spot, I just didn't know why. I would think about things like access to water, ease of navigating, concealment, food sources, etc, but I'm just not good at identifying this stuff yet. Plus I don't have access to private land, so I need to learn ways to avoid the highly human-accessed areas on public land.

The controlled hunts seem like a great idea too, especially if I can learn some stuff between now and then.
 
It's tough to just go into the woods, sit down, and expect a deer to come by. It does happen on occasion, but not often.
Deer are creatures of habit, normally traveling the same routes between bedding and feeding areas. Even when spooked, they will bolt randomly for a short period, but will eventually return to their known trails for the very reason they used them in the first place, ease of travel, concealment, and it's the shortest path to their safe place.
All of that goes out the window when the bucks go into rut. They will go anywhere, in their search for a lonely doe.
