Hey guys am looking at both the howa 1500 tactical with 10 rd detachable mag and the remington 700 sps tactical both in .308. Both have 20 inch barrell and hogue stock. Wanted to see if any of you more experienced guys have any help you could offer in making my decision. Both have great reviews from what I've read. Appreciate any help! Thanks

If you're looking to do any aftermarket shopping for it, go with a Savage 10. The aftermarket parts aren't as available with the Howa.
If you're keeping it stock, I would go with the Howa. I regret selling the one I had, it was a tack driver right out of the box.
When I get another bolt, it'll either be a Howa 1500 or a savage 10FCP. I'm done with any Remington products anymore, just haven't had a good piece from them yet.

Go with the Rem 700, simply put the Rem 700 is the small block Chevy of the bolt gun world, get the cheapest one, plan on trashing the stock and replacing it with almost anything else, AICS or my fav a Rock Solid are drop ins, both give you the ability to use AICS mags, both will make you a better shooter

Add
20 MOA one piece rail
Harris 6-9 swivel with notched legs with PodLok
TAB rear bag
TAB sling
And spend at least as much as the basic rifle cost on glass, and make sure the knobs match the reticle, MOA/MOA or MilDot/MRAD, NOT NOT NOT MilDot/MOA.

As 427 says, the R700 is a great action and the root of a huge majority of coustom rifles.
That said, the more recent R700's seem to be long throated(not conducive to accuracy and magazine lenghth limits how far out bullets can be seated) and the new version trigger begs to be repalced.
But of course, money matters.
Given a generous budget and a desire for a real tack driver, I would go for the R700 action, have it trued, rebarreled with your choice of barrel(Hart being a good choice), trigger replaced, and properly bedded in your choice of stock. There is an OKC area shop that does such work as reasonably as anywhere and their work is superb.
Otherwise, I would think more about the Savage 10 FCPSR. A buddy was shooting one the other day and I was impressed with the accutrigger(varmint)which could not have been over one pound and the overall rifle design was adequate. Accuracy with this particular rifle right out of the box was not impressive with factory ammo but that will likely change with proper handloads and breakin. this rifle was said to be factory bedded and barrel is floated but did not have a chance to look at the bedding. At $800 or less it will likely never be as accurate as the custom R700 but a lot cheaper.
And optics are really important and cheap optics are, well, cheap. Leupold has always seemed to be a good compromise in price and quality and the 6.5 X 20AO with target knobs is a favorite.

If you want an affordable, crazy accurate, and dependable gun that will put a smile on your face get the Howa. I had one and regeret the day I let it go. If your plan is to eventually spend 10K on every doodad, bobble and trinket available to make a 2000m one of a kind investment, get the 700. I only say that because everyone I know that has owned them eventually goes down that road.
