does it take to move the slide back on a gun to reset the hammer (on average and just a rough estimate is fine).. thanks

Depends on the gun, but in general

Stock Glocks 17#
Stock Single Stack .45 23-26#
STI w/ light spring 16-18#
Revolver around 1500- 2500# depending on the shear stenght of th frame

Now of course I need to ask WHY?????

Don't know the answer, but I'll post anyway :D

You could take a hook type scale (like you weigh fish with) and actually test this. Or if you know your recoil spring rate you could measure the slide displacement and calculate the force required.

I'd be curious to know too.

edit: ^well now I know the answer.

Guys, recoil springs and hammer springs are rated at .005" from stack (where the spring is collapsed down so coils touch coils), so this means that a 17# reciol spring is exerting 17# of thrust at the point is is almost fully collapsed. To be real accurate we would have to include friction of slide to frame, slide over magazine and ammunition, AND amount of magazine tension thrust on the slide...but in general it will take about 17# of weight hanging off the back of the slide of a glock to move the slide back to the rear...more for hammer guns cause we need to consider the amount of hammer spring to overcome and the amount less the fucrum of the hammer piviot pin...but once again, in general this is what it will take.

^That's what I thought he was asking for. Interesting I didn't know that's how they rated the spring. That is much easier to visualize than newtons/meter etc.

What is the mag tension thrust on the slide?

I was being a smartass Kurt...pressure vs. force and the incorrect usage thereof is something that has bothered me for a while. :)

Don't bring your so-called "physics" into this Austin, this is a shooting forum. :sign0024:

as for why i am in the process of "building" a training tool, so to speak... can't really expound on it until i get everything submitted to my patent lawyer and yes i did mean PSI
