holster to keep pistol on chest for hiking

Unless you're "in the act of hunting or fishing", I don't think this would work for hiking. I believe you have to still carry it concealed when hiking.

The Diamond D holsters are nice. I'm from Alaska and they are pretty popular up there. I got an Alaska Sportsman chest holster (http://www.alaskasportsmanproducts.com/) which is much cheaper than the Diamond D, but not as nice. They're listed at $80 on the website but I found mine for about a third that on sale.

You might also consider something that attaches to the hip belt of your hiking rucksack. A lot of the newer holsters have MOLLE-style attachments that you may be able to rig up to your hip belt.

Finally, for long guns, I LOVE my Kifaru gunbearer. For the weight of a heavy revolver you could probably come close to carrying a carbine or shotgun. A mossberg 500 only weighs around 6 lbs. I'd prefer to carry 6 lbs strapped to my ruck hip belt than 3-4 lbs on a chest holster any day. I prefer to carry a can of bear spray and a 45-70 or shotgun anyways :-P.

Great looking gear. Just acquired the similar Bianchi made nylon holster for my Ruger Blackhawk. I believe it was significantly less expensive and will serve me better here in the southeast. :D
